Any ideas as to what this means?

I found this picture. It is from an A body frame.

Does it mean the frame was built for a Pontiac?

Does it mean the frame was built in Pontiac (Michigan)?

Is it just code and the letters happen to be the first three of Pontiac?

On the left rear frame rail.  My 64 beaumont had this on the rear.  it was stamped   PON 6-12-64

So i assume that the picture carl is showing is for a 1967 beaumont, date code of the frame build being dec 7, 1966.  this is a 1967 then.  Body firewall tag date will be a bit after this date then, or at least close to it.

funny that the beaumont frames had "PON", i guess to distinguish them from the chevelles on the assembly line.
Anyone use some sandpaper on there chevelle frame? does it say "CHE" instead?

Ok, I wondered about that. I was pretty sure on the date, although the last "1" is confusing. Shift maybe? Shift 1, shift 2?.

Would you mind taking a peek on your 67 sometime Dave? I wish I would have remembered this when we were standing beside it yakking today.

And yes, left rear frame rail.

So Carl, is the frame from a Tempest, LeMans or a Beaumont?

That is a Beaumont frame.

I am hoping Dave can check his 67 to see what it says. I know on the new vehicles I see on the hoist at our dealership, I see 3 letter frame codes. They are a plastic tag now. I am just wondering if that 3 letter stamped code is a forerunner to the tags we see now.

Does someone have a 67 Chevelle that they would be willing to look on their frame to see what it has on it?

Carl, 65Camino just e-mailed me and wants to put his car up on stands tonight to trace an electrical  fault in the fuel gauge back to the tank. We can have a look. His car is a 1965 US car, do you think that makes a difference?

I am not sure. It would be good to see anyway. I am still hoping for more 67 Beaumonts/Chevelles to see what they have, but the 65 would be nice to know too.

Thanks.

We could find no evidence of a code on the US built 65 El Camino frame.

Dave

The funny thing is, I understand the GTO frame is the same as 442 and GS, but NOT the same as Chevelle. If so, then if this PON really means Pontiac, what possible purpose could it serve doing that? Why not save that stamping for the Goat?

Interesting...

Wonder why some get date codes and some don't?

Been really busy,  i'll try to get out the sandpaper and crawl under the cars this weekend.  Unfortunatly, my only chevelle is in storage.  but i'lll get the codes off the 64, and 67 beaumonts.

I did not see anything on my 67 chevelle convertible frame... although the frame is from a 66 Beaumont rag.

It has been blasted and powder coated so maybe its there under the powder ??

The trunk floor of the chevelle does have " CHEV " stamped in it.

You checked the drivers side rail behind the back wheel?

I know of two 67 Beaumonts within 10 miles of me here, so going to have to check them I guess.

OK, this should confuse the issue.  I checked my canadian 64 CHEVELLE frame and it says  "PON" as well.

I guess PON does not stand for pontiac.

It is an original frame for my car no questions about that part.

That's kind of what i was wondering at this point.  Does anyone know if Oshawa built the frames in house?

I looked, and could only find the Pontiac Metal Plant in Michigan.  I did find a mention of frames on biggrinCHEVYwink site, and hope you can read it. I think it must refer to PON as a frame plant, as we know GM had nothing to do, with Beaumonts, and Acadians, other than selling them   I would have thought, the frames would be from England, like the Vauxalls,Vivas, and Epics that Pontiac sold... weirdface
