Speedo gear

Does anyone have a Muncie 4 speed speedo gear ? I think they are same for some auto trans..  My auto 350 trans had a large (strange to me ) gear..        I am running 2.73 in 12 bolt, but dont know for sure, which gear I will end with ..   Just need one for now, to hold oil in.....   I have the bullet, that houses the gear...  anyone? anyone? BEULLER?    Carl #2

Is the Muncie in already or can you tell me how many teeth on the drive gear on the Muncie output shaft?

If so, please give me that number and your tire diameter. We can maybe get you close for the right gear.

I have to run for a while. Back to you later if nobody else comes in to help you.

The gears for a 400 trans are still available from the local Chevy dealers. I just bought a couple about 2 months ago. The gears for the Muncie may still be available.

Any idea what was in the automatic? That may help.

Is there a chart available somewhere that shows all the speedo gears and part numbers and their application?  I think I saw one years ago in a Chevy parts manual at a swap meet.  I assumed it would be in all parts manuals but when I got home and checked mine, that section was not there.  I know that different colours signify different ratios.  I need the correct gear for a THM400 for a 3.31 rear end; I've just got to upgrade from those lazy 2.56 highway gears!

Great link, thanks.  Now does anyone have a GM parts number list for all of the different coloured gears?  If I went into my local GM dealer and just asked for a purple gear with 13 teeth, I think they might look at me a little funny?biggrin

I wouldn't but I like to think that I am not your average GM parts man either.

I would ask what tranny and start digging.

Here's the info for the manual trans speedo gears with GM part numbers. I have not checked if they are all current numbers but they should have the supercede numbers if not.

Tooth count - color - gear ratio - part number
           18  - brown  -                 -  3987918
           19  - natural - 3:07         -  3987919
           20  -  blue    - 3:08         - 3987920
           21  -  red    -  3:31         - 3860344
           22  -  green -  4:10         - 3860345
           23  -  black  -  3:55         - 3860346
           24  -  yellow -  3:73/4:56 - 3860347
           25  -  orange -                - 3860348

No such luck finding charts. I know I have them for later years, like 70's or 80's but some of those had different drive and driven gears for the speedo.

I have a picture of gear, from 350 turbo that was in Strato Chief  Dont know what division the trans was from. I have 4 speed bullet to go in Muncie, so I could just. stick the cable on, and not worry about speedo, until I put gers in the rear. I need to install the bullet , to hold in the fluid...I (thanks to you guys), can order a 4 speed gear for 2.73/3.08 and it will do. I am running 27 inch tall tires. Still  have Pontiac ..   gear has 36 teeth  confused

You can put the bullet in with a gear that may show wrong, and at least that will seal the oil in. At least then you can drive it.

We are all anxiously awaiting your car being mobile!

I just went back and did a speed read of this post, but can't see that you've ever posted how many teeth on your drive gear that was in your TH350, or in your Muncie.

Did I miss it, or do you know those numbers?

Yes, I think we need to know that. If you look at the charts I scanned, it appears there is a few choices. Sad but true...
