how to tell an sd


ok if been reading about this registry and i was wondering what makes an sd and what makes a costum . from what i can understand my beaumont is a costum but i have all the trim for sd on it so does this make it a custom sd or what . thanks for any help.weirdface

If its a 67, i dont think the documentation from GM will differentiate between the 'sports option' and a 'custom' as the Vin prefix is the same... early production run on the 67s had 736 vin SD cars, i've only ever heard of SBC cars that were 736, but apparently some later ones left with a 396 (I would like to see this documented). One easy way is during body work, the car will not have any custom trim holes on the side of the car, only the rocker panel mouldings, and other SD trim holes...(or every body panel replaced!) one thing i learned in the last few weeks is that i 'believe' all 67 front fenders came drilled for wheelwell chrome, whether it come with or not... i wonder if this was the same for chevelles?

likely a custom unless an early SD, call GM vintage services with the V.I.N. and a credit card 1 888 467 6853 best documentation available. there were less than 70 738 vin SD's and just over 400 beaumont rags with the 736 vin-either way its a super low production car

i have some papers that came with the car it said there where only 408 made and it list the sports option . went for a cruise tonight i think i love my ride lol.

If your VIN starts with 736 then your car is a Custom. Sport Deluxe VIN numbers start with 738.

I always thought so too till I came here. They say that there are early SD cars that are Customs with the SD option.  I don't doubt it, but we are still waiting to see paperwork for one.

i believe that for the converts (that sd's were only available as 738 and w/396), but certainly not for the hardtops... there are alot of SD 736 hardtops running around (all sbc's that i have seen) this is indesputable...

still would like to see a #'s matching 396 w/736 vin....(hardtop or convert)...

loud can you post some pics of your car?? i'd love to see it! ...still need a convertible to fill out the garage!

what motor did your car come with? if a 396 does it have the BBC hood or a flat hood? without knowing a cars history from new lots of things may have changed, maybe someone found an sd donor car, maybe the car is a super early sd convertible with a 736 vin? who knows whats out there! ...stripping the car to bare metal is probably not something you want to do?! nonetheless a 67 convertible is a nice car no matter what model! so i'm sure you enjoy it!

Shawn Heffernan has a 73667 vin 67 SD 396 covertible that was optioned with an L34 396/350 hp-thought I forwarded the documentation ? I'll look to see I still have it and forward it to your e-mail.

You are correct! I have that paper work, is that convertible considered 1 of 4? and probably the only 736 vin, but 396 convertible around -would be nice to verify if it came with the flat or 396 hood. I was thinking of hardtop cars though, is there a 736 vin 396 car documented?? Would George know which 736vin hardtop cars came as SD vs. custom? or was it based on the A51 (buckets seats?). '

All the early '67 SD's had flat hoods as they would have the 73517/73617 coupes 73567/73667 for convertible model series.    The domed SD hoods were not available until the 73817/73867 cars started being built in the month of December 1966.   You could dealer order the hood after the fact but they weren't available as part of the Sport Option package. 

Remember the SD option was available on all the engine platforms (6 cylinders to 396 V8's) until the Sport Deluxe was available again as a seperate model. Until then the SD was an option listed as the Sports Option package only available on the Beaumont Custom series of car.

Loud, PM me with the numbers off your car and I'll explain what they mean and relate them back to the GM paper work you have.   The production number of 408 is for all V8 two door Beaumont Custom convertibles.

How many of that number are early Beaumont SD's is unknown at this time.

Hi Dave, i was wondering there were any 396 engined 736Vin hardtop cars? and if so, which hood? Also the code for the sports option was A51, which is normally bucket seats. Were there no bucket seat 'customs' prior to the start of 738vin SDs? It stands to reason that SD's which were SBC did not get the 'big block' hood, but not vice versa due to production or availability. also do you have any confirmation of a 1967 6 cyl SD car? i would be surprised that if these were available they wouldnt be more common like previous years...

Just asking a bunch of questions since there is a lot to learn! -not expecting all the answers, just a conversation! and doesnt seem to be any definitive rules around production of these cars... especially during the grey area between 736 sport option SDs and 738 SD's ...also I assume no SBC 738vin SD cars?

ok i have my gm doc papers on my car it came with a 283 195 hp engine . beside where it says vehicle it says 1967 pontiac beaumont sport deluxe . the option where a002glass-tinted winshield,a39frt&rr seat belts-deluxe, a51 sports option, c06 folding top power lift, m35 powerglide transmission (2-speed), n40 hydraulic steering, p01 wheel trim cover, p62 7.75-14-4 pr tire-hwy-w-wall, u63 radio pushbuttom am. sounds like its a 736 early SBC SD convertible!! first one i've ever heard of! (but thats surprising i've learned a lot of firsts on this site!) i like it in white too, there was a 67 SD 396 hardtop around here that was white with blue interior... i think it went south to an auction...

damn, if you want to sell one day let me know... i'll start saving!hahaha!

A while back 67SD396 posted his documentation page from GM showing a December build. There was 2 738 SD396 cars on that page I think. Would those be some of the first 738 cars? Anyone know when the first 738 car was made?

I kind of know what you mean... once upon a time I was 'the kid' looking for a project car with his dad... after looking at a bunch of cars, stumbled across my 67 beaumont... i'd never sell it... had it more than half of my life! my dad made sure each of his kids had a project car at 12 or 13...kept us out of trouble and gave us something to spend our newspaper money on! my oldest bro had a free 63 comet convertible field car that we restored and painted in our single attached garage (i was 8!), middle bro had a 51 ford 2dr, and i had the beaumont...

I have 2 brochures for 1967. one is an early printing, one is late.
The first lists the "sports option",  the later lists "sport deluxe".  Very interesting to compare them side by side.
they have all the same info and pics, but the one features a car on teh cover with a flat hood and bucket seats,  while the later features a bench, and big hood.
The printing date for the second"sport deluxe" version is 12/66 if that is any indication, it was not until the new year to have a real 738 car.


As a side note, i have seen a later "custom" convertible with buckets and console.  not an SD, but with those 2 options listed.
kind of interesting.

MY BEAUMONT HAS 4 STUDDED TIRES AND 2 BLOCKHEATERS......AND LOTS OF OIL UNDERNEATH.  The other one has a longer roof.
