On the road again...

Finally! Got insurance on the car and the plates registered. I fired up the Laurentain and took it for a drive (on fumes to the gas station). First thing I noticed was a nasty rubbing sound from the passenger side wheels. After putting 100 bucks worth of gas in the tank (cry with room to spare) I stopped by at a buddy's shop to put it on the hoist and investigate. Turns out the backing plate on the right rear was rubbing on the drum (phew!). Two other issues need to be addressed. One is a nasty exhaust drone at idle. I can't see where the pipe is touching but it's touching somewhere-only in gear at a light etc. Another strange noise is a loud knocking sound that will start just cruising that goes away if I just about stop, then resume the same speed again. Good for a few minutes and then it will do it briefly out of the blue. I brought my wife along for a drive and it only did it once for about 3 or 4 seconds. She seemed to think it was from under the car. Sounds like the driveshaft hitting the exhaust but there is quite a bit of clearance. I'll climb under the car and check for any contact marks on both. It was so loud at first I thought the engine was failing (sounded like a bearing knock!) If I get things ironed out I'd like to take the car to the Norwich car show this weekend. Anyone else going?

Todd

Congratulations Todd, it must feel nice to have all the documentation in place and the be cruising after all your time and hard work. I probably don't have to tell you but you never get the bugs ironed out and if you do you'll start tinkering with something that's not broken, that's what these old bombs are for!

Cool, Todd. I'm a bit jealous. My project is stalled temporarily due to other obligations. Also, both daily drivers, Roadmaster and Impala need serious attention right now.

If the exhaust is touching in gear it SHOULD be easy enough to find with someone watching while you do a slight brake stand in drive (hopefully....)

100 bucks and not full??? Owwwwwwwwww.....

$100 and not full, wow, maybe I shouldn't be in a hurry to drive mine.
Congrats, driving it after all that work, must feel good.

Will. If all goes well I'll go Sunday. I drove it again tonight. Has a decent amount of power although I'm still driving it like an old man. I think I need to adjust the float on the Holley as it stalled during a heavy stop (I had the idle a little too low as well as it sounded so freakin cool that way!) I know where the exhaust is touching. I played a bit with the exhaust tonight and it now clears however I still get some similar noises at idle in gear (the exhaust has a deep tone so I think it just resonates through the car). The weather looks good for Saturday so I should be at the Norwich show.

Drive it like you stole it..   Drive it like its your last day with it.. Redlines are for squealing.. You have to drag race it ervery day, to wear out those tires.  100.00 for gas, will last in my car, for 5 years..especially if I leave it jacked up...
