What are your thoughts on trailered cars? I have been talking with Mustang people boasting about this show coming up with a lot of trailered cars.
My thoughts are that the enjoyment is from driving and using the car. Not just looking at it. Now I know that these cars will be perfect, but who cares as one perfect car is just the same as another one.
Same as hot wheels in unopened packages, Barbies in the original box. It is self deprivation and self grandisation. Toys should be played with....cars should be driven. A few battle scars mean more to me than perfect beyond original factory production.........in fact that makes them fakes.
i think if your going to a car show you better drive up in it!! i just got done helping one of my dads buddies a bit doing the restoration (for the sole purpose of selling) on a 70 challenger, #'s matching, 383, green, and it is worth now 80,000 and he is driveing it until he sells it. Whats the fun if you dont drive it???
Trailered cars have their place..in a museum. I couldn't have a car that nice-the stress would kill me. I stress enough with my Laurention and it's far from perfect! To me my dream car would be one that is 100% rust free, has very good chrome, a strong drivetrain decent paint and a nice interior. Numbers matching isn't really an issue with me. There's so much fraud out there I wouldn't want to invest in a high dollar car. Speaking of which, has anyone read the latest issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines? There is an article on a 68 Camaro Z28 ragtop clone with a 302 cross ram, 4 speed, rear disc brakes etc that has been done so correctly, the owner even had "weathered" fake window stickers, bill of sale, a phony weathered deposit receipt (with a phony name) etc. The only way you could determine this paperwork was fake would be to carbon date it. It is unbelievable. The owner did it to prove that it could be done. BTW, there was only one Z28 ragtop built in 68 and it is in safe hands.
Trailers are for broken cars.. trailers are for drag cars going to the track. Trailers are for me, pulling my Pontiac, to the Nationals in Moncton next year.. My Pontiac GMC truck is easier on fuel and has A/C A/C A/C SO i CAN TOW...LOL i would like to buy, one of those trailer queens, and let the owner see me, go out his lane, and down the road SIDEWAYS!!

There was a big stink about this 68 Camaro on the Yenko site. Some people went so far as to say the car should be destroyed. I think most were upset because a clone was one of the cars that is in the running for Hemmings muscle car of the year. James
If people are geeting that bent over a hooby they should resign from life. A GTO is a Tempest with some options on it, a Trans Am is Firebird a SD is a Beaumont. These special option models can't be bought anymore so all these people are doing is making a car just like the factory would have, start with the plain Jane basic model and add to it making it how you want it. I personally have no problem with so called "clones". Lets face it the original muscle car was the GTO and Pontiac stole the name from Ferrari, does that make the GTO the original clone? On top of that Pontiac fixed up the original magazine test car with a 421 NASCAR motor and posted performance times that embarrassed the real GTO, the Ferrari. This has to be one of the biggest automotive frauds of the century.
I like the shows that make the owner DRIVE the car onto the show field. One of the last POCI meets I went to had that rule. It ticked some guys off. Too bad. It weeds out the clowns. Maybe you've heard the story of the high dollar Vettes with no guts in the engine. Won't even run. Strictly made to look pretty.
It is a shame to make someone start up a car that has been stored from new, never driven. But as Todd says, that car belongs in a museum.
Years ago. POCI had you vote for 3 different classes if you enter a car in their show. I will always remember what I did. The one class I voted in had a gorgeous trailer queen 57 Bonne convert. It also had a nice 57 Star Chief convert that had driven more than 3/4 of the way across the USA to come to the convention, 4 people in it, no A/C. It still had a few bugs on the bumper. Guess who I voted for..........

Cars that are trailered should definitely be in a separate class from ones that are driven to the show. Apart from that, if I ran a show, an owner would first be required to drive the car around a course and then be forced to demonstrate that everything works (like power windows, heater fan, radio, etc.) before they would even be qualified to be judged. That would weed out a lot of the pretenders and show queens who are so worried about a little heat discolouring the perfect paint job on their cylinder heads!

A sticker on my buddy's 38 Cadillac says it all "if you see this car on a trailer call the police because it's been stolen" Trailer Queens are no longer cars just someone's warped idea of static art in my opinion. My distaste stems from having a couple of Corvettes back in the 70's an 80's. The a**'h*l*s I met involved with Vette's turned me off completely with their phoney numbers match BS. I bought a '63 coupe from the original owner that was a nice car. Sold it because of the daily "expert" opinions voiced about how it should be treated led me to get rid of it. Jealousy, nit picking, and just plain pricks is all I can say about most of the trailer crowd.
It's kinda sad when u see all these cars come out just to show, Most are built to show, and built by someone else and not the owner. I,ve spent many dollars and HOURS of time playing with my car, it's not perfect and never will be, but I can drive it to work when it's screaming hot outside with not worry's. It smokes the tires in 3 gears, and never complains, LOL. It's get to a few show's, not to win anything but to show what cars used to look like. It's all about havin some fun.
You should let us know how you really feel about trailers!!!
It's sad when the old car hobby is not fun anymore because people take it too serious.
I know Carl, I get a little bent about it still. I sold the 63 split in 1990, so that's 18 years ago and it always gets me wound up. The only reason I would ever attend a show like Pebble Beach is to see the "Preservation Class". Those cars that have never been restored and can still make it on their own power.
i throw my 2 cents in... i think its all up the owner... you shouldnt assume trailer cars arent built by the owners! ...only 'drivers' can be built by a backyard mechanic? ...i agree a car is meant to be driven, but if you go through a major resto i would probably trailer the car a bit to keep all that work pristine to win some shows... depends what you want to do, if you want to win and win against real 'trailer queens' you need an edge... i've shown my car for several years when i first pulled it out, i was 16 with an amateur resto, i did all the work myself except paint... i drove the car to school and to work, but a few days before a show i took it off the road polished every nut and bolt on the chassis, touched up any paint, redyed the carpet (with spray to hide anything you couldnt get by vacuuming) and trailered it to a show... and i did resent the guys who walked by my car and said, i bet this car never gets driven!! ...but i guess i should have been flattered, because the car seen a lot of use, but looked like a trailer queen on show day... the car won a lot and received some specialty trphies too like best paint, best engine, judges choice etc.etc. but i'm sooo over that now, so the car will get driven anywhere and i dont worry if a trophy comes or not... all depends whatcha want to do with a car, and how competitive you are about stuff...
Sorry I should have said some are not built by owner, and not all. MY bad, But also mine is a driver but it's not built by some backyard mechanic, I do this for a living not just for play. I guess I'm not a fortunate one that can afford a trailer Queen. LOL.
alot of what it takes to take a car (or anything) to that level isnt necessarily a lot of $$$, just more talent and effort than the next guy, be it backyard or not...(for the record i'm not saying that I have either!!)
Choose your word's carefully Grashopper, LOL, Talent Yes I agree but effort, That's a touchy one, Time maybe a more apropriate word. I know what it has taken money wise to get my car to this stage, not subleting anything but engine work, and yes money is a considering factor. Then I guess one has their own agenda and one does what they believe to be correct for their liking.
Maybe they should start collecting fine china,instead of cars.
