59 on the road

just put the 59 on the road and it was running great for 45 min. and then it would just die on me!! I would throw it in nuetral and it would start and this happened three times. I pulled in a parking lot and could not get it started again. It would turn over but not fire. I then got it towed it home and in the morning it started and then tonight it started again. thought it might be a fuel filter but no, thought it was just timeing so we played with that and it was fine for awhile and then would just stop. Tried to start it again and then the starter was making a racket. One guy said that my headers might have heated up the starter and thats why it was clicking and was not starting. it is the original starter. Any thoughts?? I will change the starter and charge the battery and get back to ya's in the next couple of days.confused.gif

a starter problem won't cause it to stall.
next time it stalls and won't restart...check if you have spark... and crack the throttle while looking down the carb, check if you have fuel.

My wagon does this, but it has a bunch of crap in the gas tank. It needs to be flushed.I find if I keep the fuel level up, it doesn't do it.(less of the crap sloshing around in the tank) Could be your having the same type of problem. I did the same thing, changed fuel filter and it was pretty dirty, full of little peices of scale from the tank.
I have to get under there before winter hits and remove the tank and clean it out.

When it dies, check for spark. Sometimes the old coils can puke when they are hot.

we thought it might be the coil also getting hot because if you leave it for quite a while (the next day) it started up. I really should just get a new coil and i also need wires cause im not sure how old they are. my friend was saying that the headers could be making too much
heat under the hood also but i really want to keep them. Thanks for all the advice guys, i knew you guys would have some awnsers!!

Rather than just replacing the coil as a guess, the next time it dies pull the wire that runs from the coil to the center of the distributor cap and try cranking to see if there is spark. By this I mean, pull it part way out of the center of the cap, enough to leave a small gap that the spark would have to jump across, then crank and see if it sparks.

Did I explain that in a way you know what I mean?

yeah, thanks carl. Im going to try that today as well as whatever else comes to mind. I checked the fuel filter in the carb and it was fine and what sixty wagon says makes sense too because i only put $20 bucks of gas in so i will clean the tank soon also. I had it started yesterday and we fooled around with the timeing a bit and the carb and then i took it around the block a couple times and things were fine. Then i was just parked and it stopped. tried to start it again and the starter was making a clatter and seemed like it wouldent engage. Maybe the battery is draining and not enough juice but why would it do that? Coil overheating? The brushes in the generator are dirty? anyways, again thanks for the advice guys. I live @ 12 beverley st. in london Ont. In case you guys are ever in the area smile
