Insurance

What insurance do you use for you classic car? classic car insurance or regular, if its regular, who do you go with if you don't mind me asking.
Since I don't qualify classic car insurance, and I can't go with Bel Air direct because my car is too old, who do I go with??

Hey Mike. I talked to my insurance company when I insured our Tempest and they recommended the Silver Wheels plan and I think it is with Lant. The cost was right but I have no idea how they would be if I had to make a claim. Type in "Silver Wheels" into Google and have a look. They were very good to deal with so far and I hope this will be the extent of my dealings as dont want a claim.

Ya, they are very good and excellent prices, but I don't qualify for Silver Wheels either.

Well what kind of car are you trying to insure?  You say you don't qualify for Silver Wheels but you say the car is too old for Bel Air direct.confused

Lant also has a program for cars that are 15 years and older, I think they call it their special interest vehicle policy.

What is your planned use for the car?  Car shows and cruises only or regular transportation?

I just took a quick glance at the site. Maybe i missed it but is there a limit on distance driven/year? I mean can you only drive a certain amount of kms? Honestly i do take my car to work the odd time. Most of these sites only cover for driving to and from shows don't they?

I have personally spoken with Tony Lant about this several times.  Driving to work is absolutely verboten!  If you have an accident at 8:00 am on a Tuesday morning, it will be awfully hard to argue that you were on your way to a car show.  Your insurance will be void and you will be screwed.  Even going to a shopping centre is dangerous (unless you can prove a cruise is being held there) so you can't even use the car to go shopping unless you literally run in and out of the store. (the car is not supposed to be out of your sight for any significant period of time).   If you are going to major car show in the US that is OK even if though you will rack up some significant mileage.  It's all dependent on the circumstances of your accident and what you were using the car for at the time, not the actual mileage you put on the car.

It's not the car, it's the driver. He has to be at least 25 years old, be licensed for 10 years and own another car insured by another policy to qualify for Aviva Elite Silver Wheels Plan.

If you have this insurance and you let someone drive the car under 25 not licensed for 10 years you take the risk. That's why I only let Ryan, my 19 year old, burn 20 foot patches with the Beast, any more is too risky. biggrin
(if Tony is reading JK!)

Yes, I would like the car to be used for cruise nights, and shows, etc. Not really for personal use but for pleasure use.

The car is a 1968.
But I am 18. So no classic car insurance company will insure me because of 2 reasons( 1 that I dont have a daily driver, vehicle other to use and 2- because I dont have 10 years of experience) But if I were to choose to use it as a daily driver, I had some companies turn me down because the car is too old.

So what do they expect me to do.

Thats what I mean, if its a provincial law to have insurance, and no one is willing to give it to me, than what do I do?
And I have a feeling if I were to contact someone they wouldn't even give me a good answer.

Facility is the system the province has for drivers who can not get insurance. I think that's the option for you. Call the MPP!

Is insuring it through one of your parents an option?

I only live with my mother, So I don't know if its an option, maybe someone else here knows? One company said the cars under my name so I need insurance on my own name.
And another company said that they don't really beleive that my mother would have 2 cars under her name and that I am not driving either one.

Pilot, State Farm, I believe ING also

Geoff was telling a storey about a woman with a 66 Corvette, stopped for gas at a convenice store, went in to buy a newspaper-the car got stolen-trouble with the claim.

All and all Silver wheel plan is quite good considering the 19A clause etc.. covers most of us for what we do.

Regular insurance takes 15 + year old vehicles but requires an appraisal to give it and IRG code

I have contacted State Farm and ING broker for a quote since they wouldn't give me an online quote. I emailed them so I want it in writing.

State Farm was a no go. Won't insure.

And the only one so far to insure it, wants $560 a month, which I can not drive it to work, and have to drive less then 5000KM a year.

Insurance- what a joke!

Too bad you can't get a relative to insure it.  I guess though they'd have to be the owner of the vehicle too.

Ya, the agents said it would have to be under their name. And on top of that, I would have to live with them for them to insure it under my name.
