Another auto job gone


I just found out today that my father-in-law has been shown the door after 20 some years.  They let him go on Monday. He was a floor manager at Accuride in London.  They make big and small wheels for trucks.  In an effort to cut costs 23 salaried positions bit the dust.  He told me on the weekend they wanted him in Monday morning for a meeting.  It was his turn on afternoons so he thought either he was getting moved to days or shown the door...unfortunately it was the latter of the two.

I don't know what kind of package he got. He's turning 53 in November. I don't know if he's in a position to retire or not. I don't think so though. I think he could get into doing some handyman work on his own if he wanted. He did a lot of work on my brother in law's new house. They had to finish it, it was purchased after the contracter had gone belly up. It's going to take him a few days to get reorganized to figure out what he'll be doing.

 Sorry to hear about your father in law being let go Randy,

We're coming into some tough times right now. I work for Arcelor Mittal Dofasco in Hamilton. We have 5 Galvanizing lines usually working 4 shifts each, 24/7 pretty much. As of this coming Monday, 4 of the lines will be crewed back to 3 shifts, our #4 line will idled. 30% or so of the orders have vanished.
Luckily, all the guys will be dispersed across the company... at least for now.

We've never idled a line and had the others on 3 shifts since 1982.

My unit leader says that corporate is predicting that things should improve by Q2 April 09'.

Strange times. Hopefully things will pull back up.

I can't imagine being let go at 47 years old. I have 28 years service...What would I do? I have a ton of skills but no paper for them.

5 years ago I lost my job in a metallurgical lab at a local steel company, as of yet I have not landed full time employment, I started the appraisal business with my bodyman's license and am presently working a partime contract until december 08 in a pilot plant with INCO-tough times have been around for a while-things are going to get tougher-sad to say

For us there has been and increase of work since Stelco and the big D got bought out. Both new companys are big on safty and fire protection. I`m closing in on 53 and hope it keeps rolling so I can finish at 55. I have seen to many well paying factorys close up in Hamilton over the years. $25 hour lift truck drivers for P & G are now getting under $12 in Brantford. very sad

I have been waiting for it to hit our prosperous little community. We have never really had a serious slump in the time I've been in the workforce (about 35 years) but this one sure sounds like it will leave nobody untouched.

I am not sure what a guy should do to prepare, that is the problem.

Liquidating in anticipation is really not a solution, but rather a bandaid.

Sorry to hear this.  We have a lot of economists and business development forecasting types at my place and they are forecasting the economy will be pick up in late Q2 next year.  I know that is small solice for someone who is losing their job now but at least there may be some hope on the horizon.

Not to hijack this thread into a political rant but Obama really scares me with his talk of tearing up NAFTA and turning the US into a very protectionist  economy.  It doesn't bode well for either US consumers or Canadian manufacturers.cry

Frankly i'm worried by any of the politicians south of the border and here...but that's me.
I'll have to find out from my wife tonight if she's heard anything today about her dad. He was supposed to go back to the plant today to get the details on a buy out i guess. From how my mother in law sounds he's getting screwed. You work for a company 20-25 years, go out of your way and get no notice, just told to go home and now it looks like he'll get very little for those years of loyalty.

Randy, this is one instance where it will definitely be worth it to contact an employment lawyer to review any proposed settlement they may offer your father-in-law.  Tell him do not sign anything until you have done this.  The employment standards act provides the minimum standard for severance payments but the common law provides for much more notice or severance in lieu thereof, especially when the employee has the number of years of service your father-in-law has, has had a responsible position, and when future employment prospects may not be that great.

Rule of thumb normally 1 month per year of service but in this turmoil who knows. He should be getting at least 18 months in my humble opinion which is based on 28 years experience managing payroll and finances for a few large organizations. They should also give him an allowance to have a lawyer look any deal over, $500 would be minimum. Don't forget benefits either they should either continue for a specified term or pay out a cash equivilent to him. I don't know what type of work he did but sometimes a training allowance or help in finding a new job can be negotiated as well. 

Overriding factor however is Province of Ontario labour law and the company only has to provide 1 week per year of service under the law, so that would be about 5 months pay in this case.

PS: Hillar and I posted simultaneously but we didn't really contradict each other so that is good.  Just so you know you just got free advice from Corporate Counsel for a large company and from a CFO of another. It was worth the price!
