Are you sure they should be called Cross Overs? and not roll overs? We drove Station Wgons for years and they didnt cause this much grief.. Did I tell you I drove my Suburban, with the all aluminum 5.3 4x4 to New Brunswick and averaged 20.7 m.p.g.? 6500 lbs, sits high, and rides like a Caddy.... p.s. cruise set at 80m.p.h. there and back.. slowed to 75 in downtown Montreal.... love the GM stuff.....
Carl, According to a 2003 NHTSA rollover index, a big Burb only rates a 1% better index than a Jeep Liberty 4 door (pictured). And it seems quite a few crossovers arn't really that bad either.
It's the older design SUV's that are most prone to rollover. I think crossovers are more like a car than a true SUV.
But regardless, you're right Carl, you just cannot beat the feeling of crusing in a Suburban. I was smitten with a beautiful, mint, low KM, white on grey leather 05' Suburban XL 4X4. I had it out for a good test drive, and it sure felt safe and secure! Somewhat reluctantly though, we went with a 05' Honda Oddssey Touring, as we just could not get past the questionable fuel economy that we'd potentially be burdened with. It was gorgeous though, and I really would have liked to have owned one, at least once.
Cheers, Mark.

You are right ! The big Sub. is cool to drive! Barb feels safe in it!.. I wont disagree on the percentage, of roll over comparison, but the black Jeeep was in London, and the roads were dry.. I cant imagine runing into someone at the end of our street, and rolling over! 20.7 at 80 mph is good mileage... It will give 24 at 70 mph and probably better at 60 but you cant drive it 60... Its too quiet.. Its the motor with the v4-v8 computer.... You should hear that 332 cu in aluminum Corvette motor wail !!!
I don't understand how people can roll these SUV's?? I drove lifted 4X4's for years. I had hockey pucks as a body lift....talk about unsafe. Yet I knew I couldn't make sharp turns like a sports car.
my wife. bless her soul, managed to pitch this down the highway last year. she caught the slush on the side of the road. but it did its job, nobody hurt and only 2 broken eggs. dog containment fence thingy in the back kept the grocery from launching forward. nobody charged police chaulked it up to conditions. on another note i have a lifted jeep thats meant for offroad, you don't drive it like a sports car. its not designed for it. its the same as someone trying to go off road with something that doesn't have locking differentials. somebody is going to end up on the end of a pull strap.
I think alot of it has to do with the fact they think their safe in a big suv and if its 4x4 they think its industructible and can drive in any weather!! I remember my one of my ex's roomates had a 4x4 of some sort and would fly back and fourth from london to north bay and thought that if she had it in 4x4 mode she could not slide on ice or whatever was on the road!! She launched that thing off the road and rolled it three times!! She was alright though, just a broken arm and three ribs!!
