Pontiac G8 a flop

They aren't selling which is a shame as it's a pretty good car.

From The Australian News:

"Holden Exports Facing Stop Sign contemplates the prospect of GM axing Pontiac as part of its pursuit of bailout billions. The Holden-built Pontiac G8 is part of the problem, as it is struggling to find buyers. Just 13,000 have been bought since shipments began at the beginning of the year, and inventory levels exceed 11,000 cars or 283 days supply the third-worst for any GM model, according to specialist US website Automotive News. Potential Pontiac G8 buyers must now factor in an uncertain future for the brand. Its a challenging business environment for carmakers around the world, said a spokesman for GM Holden, Jonathan Rose. Were very proud of our export program. He denied Holden was adding to Pontiacs woes, and said export shipments were continuing The company expected US demand for Pontiac G8s to boost exports, but recently announced plans to shut its factory for 25 days in the first quarter next year, in addition to its four-week Christmas holiday closure.

I was looking at one the other day, impressive looking, nice interior, OK @ $35,000 if you have a job to support it-this really should fly-but I guess the customer wants a Daewoo-GM not listening to the customer again ???

I dunno what the reason. I got a chance to go for a ride in a GT and I really liked it. I'd take it over a similar BMW and you know there's lots of ways to wake up that engine even further. I think poor marketing perhaps? I hope people don't want the GM-Daewoo-they were complete POS'. I also think it comes down to affordability. There's no way I could swing a new car with $500+ a month payments. Without the option of leasing, GM lost a lot of customers.

Bad Marketing, bad timing, not a good value. When you see these sitting side by side at a Pontiac Cadillac dealer to a CTS the choice is obvious when the Caddy costs less.

I agree. I don't know about the US but here in Canada marketing for the car has been virtually non-existent. This is precisely the kind of car that potential BMW/MB/Audi/Lexus/Infiniti buyers should be looking at but GM has made no effort to go after these buyers. Only enthusiasts really know about the car and they all seem to be waiting for the higher performance GXP model that is supposed to debut next year. Also GM of Canada once again decided to screw the Canadian consumer on pricing. With the exchange rate the way it is now, it is not too bad, but when the car was introduced in February, the Canadian dollar was essentially at par but the GT version was priced $10K more than the US list price. If anyone really wanted one, they would have gone to the states to buy it. I'd like to know how many have been sold so far in Canada.

Potential BMW/MB/Audi/Lexus/Infiniti buyers don't want a Pontiac . The people buying these cars are after a name and Pontiac is not one of them.

Leasing is what really killed the motor industry. Leasing flooded the secondhand market, which killed the newcar market!!!!! What do you do with a car after the lease has expired?

That is exactly IT!!!!! We are living beyond our means trying to keep up with the Jones' and the Big Industries exploited the greed of man! I saw it with my own daughter. When her cousin bought a new Kia (Yech!!!) she also wanted to do the same! Fortunately sensibility prevailed and she is financially secure in these times where 7000 cars are being re-possed every day from people who cannot afford the payment. Everything we buy today has built-in obsolesence. They don't last like our old cars!!!!!

I never even knew about the G8 until mid summer. "G8" doesn't sound exciting to me, but the car is a pontential modern hot rod for sure. Would I buy one? Maybe if I hadn't bought a Charger Daytona and if it matched the Hemi for performance I would consider it. As far as competing with BMW, etc. I'm sure there is a large price difference. They were not on the market when I bought the Dodge. GM was late or non existent to compete here in Canada. That is the problem they are facing now. GM was always the leader in the '50s, 60s & '70s but they lost thier way.

Road testS show the G8, being a "little" faster than the 5.7 Hemi,  but it looks more like a Camry, than a muscle car ..  The Charger Daytona is a good looker...

Hey Carl, I haven't even read any tests on the G8. That car is totally under the radar which is a shame. I agree with you as far as looks go. I prefer the Daytona, and I couldn't resist the colour "GoManGo"

Styling is a personal thing, I much prefer the G8 over the Charger - that name should only be used on 2 doors!!!

I used to have the same opinion Hillar regarding the name Charger. But they didn't make a 2 door Hemi car until this year. I need a 4 door anyway and it's my company car.
I thought of trading it on a Challenger, but the dealer  wants way tooo much difference.

Call me dumb but I thought it was a good thing they offer these "performance" cars in four doors-the companies are targeting the customer that would like to buy his/her youth but in practcality needs a sedan- I think this started in the 80's with Pontiac STE-why does nobody complain about a BMW sedan or Mercedes sedan when they call it a performance car ? I like the G8 and the Charger-can't afford one-couldn't see myself buying a new car but yes I like them

what does how many doors a car have have to do with anything ?

They were before they were religated to 'niche' brand. I do think if anything fits 'niche' that would be it!
