It says, the the Government, has given $65 million in 2003, to help save the "International" truck plant in Chatham...good... Workers also gave $44 million in concessions...good... "International" is owned by NAVISTAR!      Government just awarded a military contract worth $274 Million...good,     TO NAVISTAR!     Whats wrong??  NAVISTAR are building Trucks in TEXAS      TEXAS is not in Canada     Government says...uh   We can't be held responsible for where trucks are built.....

Whoever spec'd the tender documents should have specified that the Trucks be built in Canada. Having said that maybe the trucks we are buying are not made in Canada by anyone.

Yes but;    Would this, not be the time, to maybe be more specific?   Stuff like this, will put the Government down... Navistar "owns" the "International" plant, in Canada, that CAN build the trucks...

Unless the tender said MADE IN CANADA International will build them where they can make the most profit.

I have no idea what happened but seems to me the Department of Public Works and Government Services should have specified that they be made here....just another bureaucratic screw up to add to the long list I guess. Terrible though.

I listened to a Navistar company spokesperson on the radio. He said those trucks are not built in Canada because they are different than the Chatham plant build. He pointed out the amount of Canadian part content going into them as well as service, hauling, etc. being Canadian. It would have been nice to get a stipulation on Canadian built, but I don't think anyone in Canada except General Dynamics would be qualified to do the job.

How stupid of me! I wish I had not questioned the Government!(started the thread)  $274 million is chump change!   I forgot that we are not able to build 1300 trucks in Canada... We are followers, not Leaders.

Carl, we don't know what they spec'd but it is probably as simple as Impalas are built in Oshawa and Cadillacs in Hamtamck, they are both cars but one is US and on is Canadian built, two different models.
