My uncle was at that time some sort of grounds maintenance supervisor or whatever you call it for Air Canada in Montreal. My aunt tells the story of the phone ringing and she hears Uncle Lyle answer it. She hears his voice in an amazing tone of disbelief saying "it what, they what, it did what????" over an over again!!! She thinks something awful has happened or who knows what! He hangs up the phone and relays the story to her in amazement!
Talking to people who were at the race track, they said it was the most amazing thing seeing that thing come in so quietly....

For those of you that might not know this when you translate Gimli from Icelandic to English it means home of the gods. Gimli is a beautiful place my andsesters were to first Icelanders to land there in 1876, I Was lucky enough to grow up there . In the morning I would get up at 6:00 in the morning to go for coffee just to see the sunrise over the lake it is beautiful. Now that I live in Winnipeg I sure miss those mornings

She needs to be in a Canadian museum, Not in Mojave.
I have not been to the Majove bone yard but I have seen one in Sao Paulo Brazil. It's a lot like going to a wrecking yard for cars, but I found it very eerie. I saw a Wardair plane there that had been canibalized among others, even a few old DC-3's. I think the vast size and seeing all these old planes exposed to the elements in various states of dismantling reveals how vulnerable they really are.
The Mainstay of the Bolivian airlines is the 727, which has been out of production since 1984 I believe, so there is a demand for parts in South America.
My brother was out at Gimli racing that day... he was only around 17 at the time, he tracked a monza spyder, then a new daytona 2.2 turbo (1984) then a in '85 he bought a Paul Newman/Bob Sharpe built 280z, which he still has... he best friend raced Formula 4, which i believe is what is in the picture...
he drove over to our campsite to tell us about the plane landing, I was only 11 at the time, my dad and i drive down there to see the plane sitting on the old airfield... the movie they made embellished the 'drama' at the end that had a kid on a dirtbike being chased down the runway from the plane, and showed a mix of drag cars and track cars...there wouldn't have been any dragracers there that weekend... they alternated weekends at the track from the sportscar club and dragracing...
Holy cow this was just on today on tv show urban legends.Bob Pearson was the pilot and it landed on an old airstrip that was coverted to a drag strip, that had cars racing on it earlier that day.
