Another Movie Review - The Wrestler

Went to see The Wrestler with 65 Camino on Saturday.

A lot of Oscar buzz on this one and Mickey Rouke too. The movie was ok but I kept looking at my watch to see how close it was to the end.

Marisa Tomei is absolutely breathtaking at 44, I don't think there are too many Hollywood starlets who would tackle a stripper role at that age. She gives an excellent performance in a supporting role. Her character parallells Mickey Rouke, Randy the Ram. Two performers who crave the adoring fans who are all but washed up. One can face it and one who can not. Rouke portrays his role as a pitiful complete screw up who pushes anyone who gets close to him away all for the Buzz the crowd give him. In one of the turning points of the film he chooses a one night stand with a groupie over meeting his own daughter for dinner leaving her waiting alone at the resturarant, heartbroken and in tears. He's addicted to the fans and in his role I find he's a guy I don't like or ever want to know, he is repulsive. In that regard Rouke gives an excellent portrayal of his pitiful lonely character. I keep thinking to myself that Tomi's character should get as far away from him as possible, but as a professional con man he lures her in. Maybe he is worthy of an oscar nomination but not a win in my opinion. No tears at the end of this one.

I'd recommend seeing it. Different movie that makes you think!

Loved the soundtrack!

Yes I'll agree with you on the sound track and since there is Oscar buzz probably not a bad one to take in for comparison purposes. I just feel ambivalent about it. If Rouke had done an Oscar worthy job I would have been drawn in to like him and pull for his recovery and happy ever after life with Tomei but in the end he gets what he deserves.

Hey don't mind me I thought the drug crazed Heath Ledger was marginal as Joker too!

Thats why I like the movie. There isn't a happy ending. Hollywood would love to make us like Rourke. He gets what he deserves and sets us up to believe there are choices to be made. Like when he chooses that one night stand over his daughter. It makes me think and to be thankfull for all I have in this world.

I'll step off my soapbox now and hand off the mike to ????

Wait a minute 65 Camino you should be Siskel the guy on the left, he is bald and well you know......me I look more like the chubby guy with glasses, not to mention Ebert is still alive!

If I am going to be anybody from Sesame Street it will be my hero:
