Carl, that must be the same car I once posted details on BUT we don't know if it is original or not. Will you contact the seller ? It's a good lead though.
Of note, in that same old service book I have that lists the unique Canadian only Numerical Suffix Codes, there's listings for 396/325 L35's in '65 Canadian Pontiacs..
There's no listings for the 1965 only 396/425 L78's in the '65 Ponchos...yes the book does show the L78's being available in the 1965 Chevys..
And to clarify, being a Mk. 1V they're the standard US/Canadian Suffix Codes as used in BB Chevys...not the Canadian only Numerical Codes sometimes used on '66 and earlier Small Blocks..

Hi guys, I phoned country boy autos this AM and talked to the owner for a minute. He was out of town and couldn't talk long. He remembered the car and said that the engine looked orginal to him but he didn't look that close. He mentioned it had 396 ID decals on the valve covers that looked old.
He said if I phoned him back in a week he would give me the new owners name so we could follow up.
Hi guys quick followup. I phoned the dealer and he fobbed me off for a couple of weeks due to death in the family so I guess it'll be a bit longer till I can go any further.
So, nu? two years have gone by, has anyone followed up on this elusive 65-396 Canadian Poncho, or do we have to wait another couple of years? I thought the 396 only appeared in Canadian Pontiacs in '66, the big block '65s were all 409s? Unless replaced by a warrenty claim 396 from a dealer. Maybe this is one of those cars.
Howdy I kind of forgot to followup any further. In the original post I do remember that we had a peek at the engine on the original auction ad and the top end looked as though it was 68 vintage with the PCV system plumbing. The guys who looked at it and I had the consensus that it looked like a later vintage engine.
If you think it's worth it I could try to track down the owner again. it would be good to know since we have yet to actually find a real one to this date. (and we now know that they made 409's as late as April 65.)
We have satisfied ourselves that 396 engines were never factory installed n 1965 Pontiacs and have proved that Canadian ponchos were likely the last production cars to use 409 engines.
