Looking good Carl.  I was squinting to see the hole for the road draft tube on the 327.

I have always just "rolled" the rings on in the past but somehow I get more cautious/careful/fussy as I get older. I thought I should use one this time for some reason. I'm scared of gouging a piston. Those rings are pretty sharp. Do you never use one Dave?

Never used one but always wanted one, one of those tools you always say your going to pick up but never do.

I have the "Canada Dry" version of your "Coca-Cola" multipurpose shop crate.  It's probably almost as old as I am.

I wish I had saved more of them. Man did we use a lot of them in the day....

I used to buy my bottled 10 oz cokes in those, pay the $5 deposit on the crate and then keep swapping it. I should have stockpiled!

No pistons went in tonight. I had planned to but our daughter is 12 and lately it has been all about her brother as he is heading into basketball playoffs. Ball almost every evening. It was time for a "daughter" date ( as decided by Dad, I surprised her!) so we hopped in the 6 speed and went the 40 miles one way to Timmy's for a donut!

I wanted to do engine work but all the people with kids say they move away before you know it. I plan to listen to these wise people!

Well they move out but then the grandchildren come and it starts all over again. We just had three on a sleep over last night.  I have nine grandchildren and they
keep me and my wife bussy.

Well, with a bit of luck, number one son will get knocked out of the basketball tournament early tomorrow and maybe I can roll the rings on there tomorrow night. I pretty much had my mind made up to do that since I don't have the tool and I think you just provided the incentive for me to do it without!

I think I have likely built about 8-10 engines in my life and never used a tool for the ring install yet. Why start now at 51??? !!!

Hi Carl, you won't have to work bare handed with those rings now, I dropped off the ring expander this morning.

Hey, welcome OldGoat!!!

What a fitting name you picked!!!! Haha, just kidding!

Can I share your story with the guys about who you are and your interests or are you going to get over your shyness and tell the guys a bit about yourself???!!!

And yes, I found it hanging on the doorknob. I was coming here to update the thread. I plan to install the rings with it later tonight.

Thanks.

Well, thanks to that handy dandy expander the rings went on 1-2-3 while I watched the Leafs pull off the overtime win (much to our son's frustration.........he wants the Leafs to get the draft pick and they can't if they keep winning!!!) so hopefully Monday night it's piston time.

OldGoat, if you see this you can likely keep a slot Monday night for piston installation here.

OldGoat came by tonight and we stuffed some plugs in those 4" holes!

He's camera shy, so you won't see him in the shots.....

My one concern is the side clearance on the rods. It seems tight according to the factory specs. They are around .006" to .009" and the spec is .009" to .013 side clearance. Anyone have experience with this?

I have not had this happen to me but have heard under  9 not good.  I know the machine shop can mill them down to correct spec. But also found this info about  is
ok to swap out rods from the same side to get proper clearance.
Read page two of how to build a small block chev.

That is one book I don't have!

Does anyone happen to have it and would be able to scan that page for me?
