I like going to Florida. What we do is watch for an Air Canada seat sale and plan a trip around the cheapest fare available. This year our flights are going to cost $961 return from Timmins to Toronto to Fort Lauderdale. A regular flight for one person Timmins to Toronto is appx $900. We have to travel on a Sunday both there and back.

We then rent an efficiency unit about one mile off the coast. There is all kinds of things to do in that area from horse and dog racing, deep sea fishing and there are always weekend car shows somewhere in the area, you just have to read the Sun Sentinal to find out what is going on.

If money is no object, the vacation destinations are unlimited but I would suggest joining something like "The Last Minute Club' to try and get a really good deal.

Arizona is really a nice place to visit to with lots to see, Sedona, The Grand Canyon, Hover Dam lots of sporting events Mexico not to far away.

It all depends on your own budget.

Al

You couldn't pay me enough to go back to Mexico (and I have been there as well as all over South America).  The crime rate is through the roof (Tijuana alone is up 300% in 2008) and growing and statistically Mexico City is the most dangerous city on earth right now from the perspective of being robbed, mugged, kidnapped, etc.

What's worse is that if something ever were to happen to you - as has obvioulsly been the case with some Canadians in the not too distant past - good luck getting any form of due process or anything approaching what we consider to be "justice" up here.

Hillar sounds like you picked the wrong Cities in mexico to vacation.
I personally wouldnt think of going near tj. or mexico city.Cancun is on the south/carribean side.and the town of Playa Del Carmen 1 h.r south of that,is one of the safest places to go in mex.(gated)we did our reaserch, having brought the whole family, and does'nt cost you an arm and a leg.
If you go vacation in N.Y.,you dont stay in harlem.

As long as you have your computer along to keep tabs on this place, I suppose that would be ok........

Carl, there are more car shows, cruise-ins, pick-a-part yards and swap meets that you can shake a stick at!  You are not a real car guy until you have been to Old Town just outside of Orlando: http://www.old-town.com/

Boy Air Canada sounds pretty high.  I haven't checked this year but last February I flew from Kelowna  to Orlando for a couple bucks under 500 return taxes in with West Jet.  While down there took a 4 day cruise to Bahamas for 350 Canadian.  My wife had a conference down there so she said I had to find the hotels when we weren't at the conference so Royal Caribbean did just fine.  There's lots of travel deals if you have the time to look.

South-west Florida, the Ft. Myers, Naples area is good this time of year also. You can go boating, fishing, hangin out and looking for cars. It's all good.

Well you only have 4 more months to go, what's the problem!!!???

I have mentioned before and will mention again, any Canadian Pontiac guys who want to spend a few days here for free (got yer own BR and bath), lounge around on our docks (picture below), drink Beer (sorry you have to bring your own Kokanee), bull**** about cars, work in my garage (hey there is some payback for everything), just give me a holler!

For car guys, central FL (orlando) over to Tampa/St. Pete's and then down the Gulf Coast is probably the best.  My favourite pick-a-part yard is Coeffer's in Clearwater.  It is so nice, all the rust free cars spread out on a nice sandy lot, nothing stacked on top of anything.  Best swap meet is at Webster once a month, it's like a mini Carlisle.

Dave, after clearing the driveway of snow for the millionth time this winter (I think the blower is due for it's first oil change already!) and then spending an hour tonight on a ladder trying to hammer out an ice dam a foot thick from my gutters with a chisel and sledge (I have water coming in our sunroom now) I'm about ready to move to the south! This has to be the longest damn winter in a long, long time..

I dunno, I really liked Mexico City?! Resorts are for tourists!hahaha! I'm starting to plan my next backpacking trip, a month in Cambodia, Vietnam and Bangladesh in May... then Thunder Bay in June! I like the big dirty cities that give me some culture shock...then i really appreciate home, been to about 25 countries so far...

I went to playa last year to relax for a week, it was nice, i liked going snorkelling a bit, went to tulum, etc... i stayed at the blue bay grand esmerelda...

Prices to cuba are really cheap, veradero, and at least you can get away to Havana for something interesting... i havent been, but if i wasnt planning a bigger trip i'd go there for a week...

I will be in Tampa FL from the 4th to the 11th of march, I can't wait ! I'll go visit the Pontiac speed shop and hopefully buy parts for my engine in Brooksville, check out the PONTIAC DUDE site.

On the holiday destinations, my sweetheart just left this morning for Puerto Plata w/ the kids..   Too busy at work to go myself but $800 each for flights and an all inclusive resort that's a known great one seemed too good a deal!.

Congrats Todd!!!

I write to you from North Ft Myers.  It will be 71 today, we're having a bit of a cold spell, 76 tomorrow.  Last week it was primarily in the high 70's to mid 80's.
I have my travel trailer parked in an RV park until April.  I stopped and bought a 67 Chevy II 2dr sedan, all original with a 283/powerglide on the way down.  This gives me something to tinker with when the wive goes shopping.  I will be attending the NNN Mini-Nationals, Feb. 27-28 at old town, Orlando.  We have friends and relatives also staying in this area.  Car shows and swap meets to attend or do a little fishing.  Board a last minute cruise from Miami at a 50-75% discount.  We also enjoy spring training baseball in March.  Today's Super Bowl menu includes giant shrimp on the grill, some blackened fresh catch along with fresh tomatoes, peppers (green, red, purple, yellow), red skin potatoes and melon bought yesterday at the farmers market.
I forgot to mention the pool with water temp in the 80's or miles and miles of beach on Pine Island, Sanibel or Naples and Marcos Island a little ways down the road.
Yes, there are some benefits to working all your life and being over 60.
See you all in the late spring unless you choose to visit the tropical breezes of southern Florida.
