My 66 SS396 with a M21 & 4.56 gears on L60 X15's 3500 rpm at 60mph, just a little slow on the highway but a great launch !

Whoa! I had a 66 SS396 too! First car I ever bought new. Convertible, bucket seats but no console, M20 & 3.36 gears, I never changed speedo gears when I went to L60 x 15s but memory tells me that it ran about 10% higher and that the speedo showed 70 mph @ 3000 rpm - I always figured 'the law' gave me the 10% over hahaha.

Here's the plates I had on my Chevelle (still had it with me 15 years later when I moved to Florida):

Thanks. Unfortunately all I have left of the car is the plate, the car itself was my daily driver in Wisconsin, and the winter salted roads got that demon rust started ... eventually the cowl was rusted out, that beautiful SS396 hood was rusted out, pretty much everything was rusted out ... I sold the hulk for $1000 to a body man who had a rustfree hardtop, he was going to cut off my windshield posts and use the convertible top mechansim with my VIN plate to build a 'new' convertible ... I heard later on that he did, even to rebuilding the 396 ... but I never saw that car again tears.gif

But it was a great ride, with great memories, like I'm sure yours was!

Dave

Ya some of the cars we always say we shoulda kept, but hey life has to go on and if you need the play money for something important, it has to go. Theres always another car out there anyways. I sold my 360hp 4spd nu match car and fixed up my shop so I could redo the other 66 ss396 car that I still own.
