I finally have some time to work on my engine again and I'm struggling. I have a block plug kit from Sealed Power. My block had all the plugs removed when I got it.
As you can see in the pic, I seem to have extra on some and am short on others. I need 5 press in plugs, 1/2" diameter. 3 go in the front around the cam, 1 goes above the oil filter in the side of the block where the pressure relief valve is, 1 goes in a port on the top/side of the block right beside the oil pressure sender hole. The kit only has 3 of the 1/2" plugs???
I need 3 threaded 1/4" MPT plugs for around the cam at the back. The kit comes with 5. Any ideas? I find no place for the other 2.
I need 1 plug 9/16" for the oil gallery deep into the block under the rear main cap. The kit comes with 2???
The three little press in plugs appear to have no home at all in this block???

The extra 2 threaded ones are for the lower coolant drain plugs. I would suggest reusing the factory ones with the 9/16 wrench end if you ever want to get them out again. Those allen head ones are a pain.
As for the extra 3 press ones.......is it possible that the was 2 different sizes based on year of block. Or perhaps the frost plug kit is for multiple applications?
The kits i get only have the 3.

MY BEAUMONT HAS 4 STUDDED TIRES AND 2 BLOCKHEATERS......AND LOTS OF OIL UNDERNEATH. The other one has a longer roof.
carl, is not the oil hole galley hole in the top/lt rear threaded for 1/4" NPT?
If you mean the hole in the center of the picture, nope, not a thread in sight. I think the kit must be for a newer one or something. It measures 1/2" so I guess I will just have to buy one.

I forgot about the coolant plugs being the same. I had my head all wrapped up in oil. You are correct, those allen heads will never go in one of my engines for coolant plugs. I have lots of the old originals around.

I think 86 and newer blocks have smaller front oil gallery holes. Pre 86 the larger ones.

Ok, thanks. I wondered about that since it was also quantity of 3. That makes sense because inside the plug it says 10 8 and I bet that means 10.8 mm. Thanks, bet you solved that riddle for me.
I guess I just have to go out and buy 2 of the 1/2" press in plugs to fo that port pictured above and also the external one just above the oil filter.

Would that be block casting number 3790721 ? Just checking with my book and shows was used for 65 and 66 chevy II. What are you using it for Carl ? I am just checking to see how accurate this book is.

Yup, bang on. It actually is a 64 block, cast Dec 28 1963. They used them 3 years in Chevy II. If anyone has one to sell I would like to get my hands on one more.
It's going into my 65 Canso.

Is that a chevy 2 specific block? I heard the nova blocks had a recessed oil filter area. Those ones are worth a small fortune! especially a 3-2-7.
I guess the way the frame is, there is not much clearance on the nova bodied cars?

Yes, it has the recessed spin on filter. Unique to 64-7 Acadians. Oh yeah, I guess Chevy made a lame attempt at copying Acadian and called it a Nova so they likely used the same block.............
Actually the reason for the oil filter made that way is because it's the only way they could make the clutch linkage work on manual trans cars. They had to move the filter up farther into the block. You drop down the clutch fork pushrod to spin off the oil filter.

they're usually thread in carl, same square hole socket as the 3 rear galley plugs.
Well, if I can ever find a place that carries the brush for running throught the oil galleries I can get on the road to assembly.
I called around this afternoon and couldn't find any place in Winnipeg that carries a wire brush for 1/2" bore. I see Princess Auto has for 3/4". More tries tomorrow I guess.
I think when I bang in these plugs I may put a drop of Loctite on them for security.
