I'm not sure how much coverage the plane crash that killed 50 people in Clarence Ctr New York got up in Canada, but I thought I'd tell you about how close my family and I are to the crash scene. Less then 1/4 of a mile away and bam a plane drops out of the sky like a giant missle and smokes a neighborhood home. It was crazy. A bunch of our neighbors saw it, but we just heard what sounded like a real loud plow truck with it's plow down on dry pavement and then bam a huge orange glow and flames and smoke and crazyness everywhere. It was amazing that anyone in the home survived but somehow 2 women , a mom and her daughter actually got out a the house alive . The dad sadly was not so lucky. For days the scene has been to hot still for the crews to go in and start searching for the remains. The brave fireman of Western NY did an amazing job containing the fire so no other homes had much damage. You just never know when it's your time. Things like this always seem to put things in perspective for at least a little while. Our prayers go out to everyone effected by this terrible event and thank god that more people were not hurt.

Being so close by the Toronto news-choppers were there pretty fast that night feeding back aerial shots. It is just a terrible thing. One week a miracle on the Hudson then this tragedy. I watched some of the services on Buffalo TV stations, very emotional and sad.
That was quite the crash. I agree with Carl about you and your family being safe. When ever there is a crash I remember Peggy's cove and Swiss air. I was on the ship they brought everything up to. We spent a month out on the water right above the crash within sight of the lighthouse. Gave me lots of time to reflect.
Possibly speculation, but they're saying now the plane was found to be in an Autopilot condition at the time of impact. Wouldn't a pitching and rolling plane in icing conditions need to be "hands on"? Or would the computer do a better job? I don't know?
Horrible loss. everyone on board has a story.

As you know Bill, we get all of the Buffalo stations here in Toronto so we got the same coverage as you did. I spent a lot of the day on Friday watching WIVB on line. Really horrific but I guess we should give thanks that more people were not killed on the ground. Just tonight they had further analysis from the black box and it appears the plane first went nose up and then pitched and rolled straight down 800 feet in five seconds. They had a computer graphic showing that anyone that wasn't strapped in probably was pitched back and hit the ceiling hard enough they may have died from that before they hit the ground with over 2G's in force. If the plane had come in low and level instead of straight down, I shudder to think how many would have died on the ground.

We do work for the company the one Canadian worked for. One of our guys had to go down there today for some service work. They are a close bunch of workers. Very sad.
