New Muncie

Finally started to work towards installation of the new Autogear M 20.
I installed my original shifter to make sure it fits. Needed shims behind the shifter plate 3/16ths.
Everything then worked the same as previously.

Next step was installing the reproduction shifter. This took about an hour and a half in order to adjust all the rods, figure out that the reverse lock out pin needed adjustment and then swap rods with spares.
Now it works. Less sloppy than my original. We will see whether I am actually happy, when I drive it.

Looks good Rick. I checked out the link for the trans. manufacturer. It appears they have high quaility internals. Do you have any feedback from other guys who have run the same trans.? I am curious because my Beaumont is in need of a very strong 4spd. Did you have it shipped or is there a local supplier? I have bought two automatic trans from out of the states now, and have been happy with both of them. At the time it was more affordable from across the line but now I am not so sure. The shipping from Michigan to Calgary wasn't overly cheap. Broker wasn't cheap either. The next time I shipped with UPS which is more money but avoids brokerage hassel.
Anyhow, about your trans, when's it going in? Do you need a hand? I am still home. Be glad to drop buy and help out for a couple hours.

I read about the new Autogear supercase transmissions on chevelles.com and it seemed like a good option. There are other outfits that put Chinese internals in the Autogear cases and might be a little cheaper but I thought I would get the Italian gear set along with the Supercase. Gears to Go looked after everything.
My basic assessment was that a refresh on the old M 20, keeping the old hard parts was going to be in the neighbourhood of $1,500. The new one was less than $3,000 CDN landed my door.
Not sure yet, when I am going to install this.

Rick

Mike: another good way to go is to find a SuperT10 out of a late model 77-81 Trans am or Z28. The Super T's are much stronger than the muncie & have a better 1st gear. The 1980-81 have a 3.42 first gear if I remember right. If you can find a cast-iron case model, they are almost bulletproof, no case twist. I did this swap on a 66 SS396 Chevelle about 425 Hp and it worked well..... lo buck option that works !

I rebuilt the muncie in my 80 Z-28 for 1100$ but it is amazing! US gear makes all the internals, shifts smooth, hi rev shifting is no problem, I say rebuild instead of chinese crap inside the case. As you get what you pay for, and sire as s$#T IT WILL DETONATE WITH THAT OFFSHORE JUNK!

DSCN0267.JPGI managed to get everything buttoned up enough today to actually drive the car today. It moves under its' own power now. I think the reproduction shifter will need to come out. It feels like a piece of cr@p.

It's an easy way to lose about 200lbs.

Keep the cash, send me your cars by paypal and your phone number so you can balance my next set of tires by phone. Then you can drive anything I have if your visiting.

Hey, thats because your 1980 muncie is actually a Borg-Warner Super T10 ( if its out of a Z28 or Trans-am) much better , otherwise it would be a weany Saginaw.
