Canadian Pontiac Myths

This is for those "unproven, undocumented" CP stories of what was built, etc...  It is not for "what ifs" and such. This is for things that people have claimed to have knowledge of seeing or at least hearing of over the years.

1) First generation Firebirds powered by small block Chevy engines.

2) GTO's with big block Chevy engines in late production 1970 due to an engine shortage.

3) 1965 B bodies with 396.

4) Z16 equivalent 65 SD Beaumont

5) Beaumont's (likely 67) with a 427 from the factory.

6) FM radio option for late production 64 Beaumonts. Same rumour I've heard for late 64 GTO's in the USA.

We can add as necessary. Please don't argue these myths unless you have indisputable proof they are fact and not fiction.

If this turns ugly I will ask Todd to delete the thread!

Sure, although I have heard both actually.  Done!

Here is the Firebird info from my earlier post:

By mid-point of the 1968 SCCA Trans-Am season, defending Champion, Jerry Titus, had signed with Canadian businessman, Terry Godsall, to form a new team of Pontiac Firebirds for 1969.

Requesting early release from his Ford Motor Company/Shelby American driver's contract, Titus left the '68 season with just one race to run -- Kent, Washington. Armed with a new shop and several former Shelby crew members, the newly formed TG Racing (Titus/Godsall) set out to build a new Pontiac Firebird in time for the last race of '68.

A "privateer" Camaro had caught Titus' eye at the recent Riverside, California Trans-Am race. The highly skilled owner/builder/driver Jon Ward was contacted and a deal struck that permitted TG Racing to convert his Camaro into a Firebird.

For 1968 and 1969, a loophole in the SCCA rules permitted Pontiac Firebirds to run Chevrolet engines, as that's how they were sold in Canada.

In just three weeks, the transformation was completed, an Al Bartz 302 cubic inch Chevrolet engine installed and TG Racing's first Trans-Am Firebird was on its way to Kent, Washington.

The scramble paid off, as Titus set a new track record and put the TG Racing entry on the pole. It was nearly a Cinderella story with Jerry leading the race until the engine blew.

The GTO rumour concerns 1970 models, remembering that GTO's only were built in Oshawa in 1970 and 1973.

Speculation is that the factory ran out of Pontiac 400's and the last 11 1970 GTO's got Chevy big block 402's. We yapped on this before.

If I remember correctly, the person who convinced the Trans Am board to allow the 302 in that first Firebird, told them that Canadian Pontiacs ran Chevy engines from the factory, and showed proof, but never actually said that the Firebirds ran them. So they got away with it for a short time. After that they used the destroked 400 for the series.

Sounds right.

I think I also read on here the other night that the Tin Indian Stock or Super Stock race car (Acadian version) ran a big block in 66 because they convinced someone that the Acadians came with rat motors!

Was it possible for a US dealer to import a Canadian Pontiac/Acadian/Beaumont? Sort of neat to see the Acadian with an Akron Ohio decal on it.

Just adding that back in the day money talked, copo existed, I guess anything was possible. Be cool if someone could prove a 70 goat was born with a BBC.

Factory Shop Order. The difference is that although COPO cars could often be ordered with factory engines, colour-combos, etc., not normally available in a particular car line, FSO cars were pulled from the assembly line and custom-built with unusual paint jobs, hand-built engines, aftermarket wheels. extra taillights, etc.

I'm aware of four such cars. There may have been more. Sorry, no Pontiacs that I know of.

Same here. I well remember seeing SBC's in 67-69 Firebirds by 1970. One '69 in particular with the 350 emblems on the hood had a 350 SBC. Even though it was said to be an original,I doubt it. By then a lot of cars were on their 2nd, or 3rd engine.
I bought my 1st Firebird in '73. It was a '67 326 which was a strange engine out east in Nova Scotia.

My wife's Dad bought her a brand spanking new 1976 Firebird Esprit 3 days after she got her license from Hogan on the Danforth in Toronto. His nephew was a salesman there too. It was very nice, White on white with black dash, console and package tray and this nice over the roof wide Silver stripe, 350 Pontiac. Unfortunately he passed in 1983 but he had a successful business on the Danforth which we sold. My MIL has lived on the proceeds from the sale of that business to this day.
