Take a stab.

I know it's all guesswork, but I'd like to hear some educated guesses about how many mid-to-late-60s Canadian Pontiacs are still alive.

Considering that a great many went to the boneyard following accidents or wear-outs or rust-outs, what percentage do you think survive to this day in.....

- Eastern Canada?  ___%

- Western Canada? ___%

confuse

(NOTE: To help clarify, I'm referring to cars still around as either drivers, cars awaiting restoration or even parts cars. Most anything but dissolved into iron oxide)

I'm basing this on what I see out there attending cruises around Southern Ontario and to see a Pontiac of any description is pretty rare BUT I almost always see a Beaumont when I go. The most often spoted Pontiacs I see here are 65's but I'd say the 63 to 67 range is what I see the most of.

My guess is 3 - 5% for the East. I can't make any comment on the West.

I think the majority of the B's are in Alberta, Sask and Manitoba. The big CP's seemed to have a big following in those provinces in the 60's.

Why don't we begin a registry on site?

I have never seen another 2 door post mid sixties pontiac.  That thing is tres unique!

As for registry it might worth taking a stab at it.  I can think off the top of my head of 11 that exist between 1953 and 1967 between my 2 brothers and myself.  We just can't stand to see those things go. (Although we did finally dump a 65 parts car hulk this fall.

If anybody wants to start it, I'll help fill it.

I would say you guys are guessing high. I would bet less than 3-5% in the west. Think of the totals produced compared to what we actually see or know of.

And of course, I could be wrong for the first time.......

I have said befor in another post.  I write down every beaumont i find in manitoba.  Have been doing it for the past 10 years or so.  I have about 240 beaumonts from 64-69 on my list.
(I'm sure carl could ad quite a few to my list)

So, let just say there are about 300 or so in manitoba, what percentage does that make it?

With the beaumont club in BC, there seems to be a very hight percentage in BC.

Out of curiosity, what percentage of the cars you have noted would you say will ever be on the road again? I am guessing it's likely less than 20%, or???

By the way, do you know of 2 67 SD big block cars, one not far north of Emerson and one out near Winkler? The Emerson car has been in the bush for years (gonna fix it up one day.......) hood scoop between the louvers on the hood and the Winkler car is a bit of a hot rod too I think.

Pontiac production 66 to 70 calendar year total 371,925.

If 10% still existed that would be approx. 37,000 cars.
Alberta 10% of total would = 3,700
Calgary 40% of that would = 1,480

I can count approx 60 cars in those years that I have seen or heard of for those 5 years in the past 10 years that I have paid attention. That includes the cars that I know are scrap/scrapped in the region.

Could there be another 1,400 in the Calgary area that I don't know about?

seventy2plus2 may have a different total because he pays more attention than I do to all the cars. I counted about 30 67's and only 30 others, most of which were in wreckers outside of Calgary.

This is an interesting thought process.

Of the 39 67 396 4speed 2+2's, I have seen mine plus 1 hardtop and heard of 1 in Newfoundland. I have not heard of anyone else admitting to owning 1.

There must be more known?

Rick

In my rought counting,  there are about 180 still on road(or roadworthy). so 60 that are rough, or crushed already.

Howdy guys, According to my totally scientific analysis there are about 2% survivors of any condition from 1950-1960 here in the west (Man, Sask, Alta BC) and about 4% from 1960 to 1970.  How did I get this you may wonder?

I added up all the production numbers for Canadian Pontiacs I could find by year mostly from Parry Zavitiz's old book on Canadian cars., I assumed that 1/4 of them went out west.  I assumed that there were 2000 survivors from 1950-1960 and 8000 from 1960-to 70.  (More were built, roads were better and they are newer)

I worked out the numbers and rounded the crap out of them.  That's the kind of thing the GOV would have paid me 1000's for as a consultant, eh?

How many of these will ever see the road again?  Maybe 10% of that.  That's why I had to smile when I was in Edmonton the other day and I saw a  well used 64 4 door hardtop surfing through the slush with style.  Kinda made me wince but still thats what I call hanging in there!

Love that avatar grandeguy.
Gotta love that GM 503 light green paint code.  My all-time favorite for 60's gm trucks!

If we could only get access to the provincial ministries of transportation and their records we could have our answers.

I think the numbers are quite lower than everyone has been mentioning.  Certainly with respect to B bodies in Ontario, where the use of salt pretty well killed most of these cars in 5-7 years in the 60's and 70's.  I have seen very few 67-70  B bodies at cruises and shows in southern Ontario, strangely enough, somewhat more 61-65's.  What are the total production numbers for all these years?  I would be quite surprised if more than a couple percent still survived.

HI Beaumont, yeah that colour is really neat but it got me in trouble  I told my wife the pickup I was buying in 2004 was totally mint (She knows enough about the old car game to know what that is supposed to mean.) So I brought it home and had to put some money into it.  (The front end was kind of loose)  So she was standing there with the hands on the hips while I had all the ball joints off saying, "I thought you said this truck was mint and you wouldn't have to spend any more money on it!
I said, I was only talking about the colour!

Uh huh she says and stomps back to the house.

I think she's almost over it now.

Or you could have said "No, I said it was going to cost a mint...."

i imagine model type could affect numbers, people likely kept 2 door hardtops and rags longer as apposed to wagons and 4 doors

I lived out in Nova Scotia in the late '60's and back and forth to Ontario in the early '70's. Pontiac's were everywhere then, and I bought plenty of mid 60's Parisiennes and Laurentians, Strato's and even a few Beaumonts. Without exception every one of them needed at least a floor patch to get thru Safety Check. A bunch of them were rusted and smashed beyond saving and cheap to replace. Average age of them was about 5-7 years old. A few of them were so far gone by then that they were junked when I was done with them. The Nova Scotia cars were by far a lot worse due to salt air, 427Carl can confirm this.
By the late '70's when the down-sized GM's came out and gas was high priced again a lot more of them were scrapped. By the mid '80's a few guys started to save them but rust killed off another round of them.
Here it is 2009 and they still survive, Why? I like to think because enough people realized how unique they are, and we will never see that again. I stick by my estimates, but that may only be wishful thinking!

And now, Ford of Canada wants the federal government to offer a $3,500 old car scrap incentive on a new car purchase. This would apply to cars over 10 years old.

I suppose you'd at least have to "drive" it in, otherwise they'd be dragging in any old field wreck for the money.

If that incentive gets put in place, there goes a bunch of old cars.
