Best Goalie Ever

I gew up watching some good ones but Martin Brodeur sets the record in wins tonight and only a matter of time before he sets the shutout record.

Well Kidd was very good as a junior but boy if Brodeur had played his career in Canada I dare say he'd have the shutout record by now. My son is a goalie and Brodeur has been his favourite since I can remember and he's 19 now.

Getting seats in Toronto is impossible so two years ago we got some in Ottawa and made the trip to see him play. My son will never forget that, we sat behind his net for two periods, watched the entire pre-game warmup where he took a high shot off the collar bone and went to the room. I thought all that way and he won't start. Not only did he start but he favoured that injury all game BUT he single handedly beat the Senators. It was a 3-1 game and the Sens got a goalie out marker to bring it to 3-2, with less than a minute to play he faced a barrage of six attackers but he shut the door for the win. I'll never forget that seeing him play live.

Congrats to him,he is a definatly good goaltender.I still believe you cant compare him or todays goaltenders or game to the way the it used to be played.Sawchuck probubly played 1/2 the games in a league that only played what 40ish games per season.
I imagine Brodeur will beat sawchucks record early next season.Don't forget, this is brodeur's 15th season.I havent checked any stats, but his games played must be nearly double sawchucks. Can you compare the two.?Me personally,I dont think so.
If it were judged by stats alone,I would consider it a legitimate record.

I won't argue that Sawchuck is not one of the best and I respect your opinion, heck he was on the Leafs last time they won the Cup so that is saying something right there.

The eras are so different it is clouded but I know Sawchuck never faced Gretzky or Lemieux or consistent 100 mph shots coming off grapite sticks. Less games meant more rest, just some other things to considered.

For my part I  think Bobby Orr is the best player ever and I'm sure others have their own view on that too.

I'm with you on Orr. He was the best player. As for the Best goalie.....Todays goalie's have way bigger pads. As for my pick on a goalie is Ken Dryden.

Dryden for sure! ( seasons, how many cups, calder, vezinas, an over 740 carear winning % 6 losses in a season, I mean shall I go on? The team was good, but the oilers were just as good but fuhr had nowhere near the #s Dryden had. Dryden all time greatest.

Some other things for consideration:

They were still facing hard shots with less protection back then.
In Sawchuck's days they where allowed to hit the goalie if he was out of the crease.
They had a goaliestick the weight of a 2x4x8, and a straight blade.
A workout regime for a player back then wasn't as technical as now.
The goalie's trapper/blocker were a lot smaller and less than perfect.
The goalie's jersey, chest protector, etc. back then wasn't like present ... the size of a hang glider!
The goalies pads were how wide back then? They were stuffed with horsehair and sawdust!biggrin

It's like comparing the "deadball" baseball era with the modern baseball era.

I'm a Dryden fan also!winner.gif

I'm just glad Brodeur beat Whiney Roy's record ... I have no use for Roy!

Good luck to him, last year I coached Juvenille Rep 18-20 and next season I have agreed to take a Minor Bantam team 13 year olds!

Dallas looks like they could be had tonight!, Canucks gave it to them last night.

Sounded like Gump Worsley was a character.  I heard that he had quite a fear of flying so whenever possible he would take the train and supposedly his second worst fear was that the train would get struck by a plane.  Pretty tough to compare them with how the game has changed,  I just respect anybody who's crazy enough to be a catcher or a goalie.  I'd rather be throwing or shooting at them.

You could hear the Gumper swearing at his players when you sat close enough at the Gardens or Forum and choice too. I met him on a couple of occassions and he was as crusty in person as the legend says, likeable but crusty.
