Engine Nomenclature Research Project

We have been discussing the various names that Canadian Pontiacs have associated with the various engines offered over the years. Jet Flame, Strato Six, Astro Flash etc....

I looked around the site last night and I think the information is all there from about 1955 to 1970. If needed I may PM the original poster if information is not legible.

Over the next week or two, I'll work to consolidate this information in some useable format and offer it up for everyone's use and reference. It can be a living document and updated as new information becomes available. I'll include all engines possible including 4's, 6's and V8's for all brands on board. If it turns out to be easy I'll expand to GMC's too.

If anyone is doing this or knows a source for the information please let me know, otherwise stay tuned.

I think it can be very usefull , That info is available on sales brochurs, You can find that info on 68sd's regestry lists. He has done a wonderfull job with all the links he has on each regestry. His latest addition is a link to sale's brochures for each year.
The information available on this site is just amazing and is just getting better every day.

Ian

I thing the engine names are just as important as the name of the car, both unique to Canada.

I have gone through the raw data once already and it is all written down in rough format from 1955 to 1970.

What I found was that 1956 was the first instance in the sales brochures that the engines were named, looks like 1969 was the last although 1970 Air Cleaner decals still have the names, so I have gone from 1956 to 1970.

Another interesting bit of information, the 283 V8 was offered in various forms for 10 consecutive years 1957 to 1966, making it the all time leader of Canadian Poncho power plants in this era. In 1958 a fuel injected version was called the Power Chief, offered only in 58.

Both the 261-6 and 327 V8 share second place being offered in 7 consecutive years each.

With luck I'll have something ready by the end of the weekend.

I have the chart finished but it is to big to post, at least that is the error message I am getting. I'll figure it out.

Thanks Fred, I broke it up, it's over in the Library, some formatting was lost too, but its there. I closed it too so no posts. You can PM me or leave comments on this thread. Let me know if you find anything that needs corrections.

I started on the GMC's....Thriftmaster 6, Tradesman 283.

Nomenclature can refer to a system of names or terms, or the rules used for forming the names, as used by an individual or community, especially those used in a particular science (scientific nomenclature) or art.[1]

You know I did this because of the names but with all that engine information there it is easy to see at a glance the most used engine, the 283, the most used 6, the 261, the highest output engines 409 2x4bbl Super Flame and Jet Flame 427, the lowest output engine the Econoflame 4, the rarest engine the Power Chief in '58 only and I could go on and on. Lots of good information there.

Why would you want to slow your car down, Carl? I ran many a CJ and SCJ Mustang, back in the day, and sadly they were a yawner.

Here's an example.....

Representative Performance

0-60 mph, sec: 5.4
1/4 mile, sec @ mph: 14.01 @ 101

I was usually rolling back down the return lane by then. rofl.gif
