Obama orders GM and Chrysler out of NASCAR

With their racing budgets deemed unnecessary expenditures, GM and Chrysler are ordered to cease racing operations at the end of the season.

In a move sure to spark outrage, the White House announced today that GM and Chrysler must cease participation in NASCAR at the end of the 2009 season if they hope to receive any additional financial aid from the government. Companies around the globeHonda and Audi, to name twohave drawn down racing operations, and NASCAR itself has already felt the pinch in the form of reduced team spending.

The statement goes on further to say the same demand will be made of Ford if it asks for government assistance. In order to receive this money, corporations must demonstrate they will spend it wisely. Racing has been said to improve on-road technology, but frankly, NASCAR almost flaunts its standing among the lowest-tech forms of motorsport. NASCAR is not proven to drive advancements that transfer from the racetrack to the road, and this nations way forward does not hinge on decades-old technology. We need new, and we need innovation.

Automakers used to operate on the principle of win on Sunday, sell on Monday, but the Auto Task Forces research just doesnt validate that as true, said the statement from President Obama

No real surprise here.  I wonder who, if anyone, will step into the gap?  Hyundai?  Don't laugh, they are now the 5th largest car manufacturer in the world and just introduced a new V8 engine in their Genesis sedan...

I just commented to 65Camino on Sunday while we were watching the race how could this be justified in such economic crisis ?

I am sure NASCAR is "sheeting a brick", they have gone so far from their roots that corporations are essential to it's ongong viability. As this recession deepens I am sure racing will soon be seen to be completely irresponsible behaviour by the public. I'm not prediciting the end of NASCAR but the writting is on the wall.

Honda already pulled out of Formula One, they sure as heck aren't going to replace that with good ol boy racing,

I agree that Nascar has just become one great big private commercial. If it is going to survive, it may have to go back to it's roots with cars sponsored by individual dealers or garages.

That's what 65Camino said too. Is there any chance this is a big April Fool ???

If you saw the F1 race on Saturday/Sunday the winner hardly had a sponsor patch on his uniform!

It's dancing with the devil. The minute the Government got in bed with them you know they had to follow orders.

Ford must be laughing at this. Yes, sales are down but at least they can do as they please and make cars that will sell. Not these econo boxes that will be forced upon them that not everyone wants.

That is if it's true. But Nascar will not post something like this...

Lets put racing back in the hands of Racers. Just finished a book on Mickey Thompson. Wow, what a life!

Well the answer is YES. I still stand behind what I wrote above though. Pretty plausible prank. I bet GM and Chrysler are some PI$$ED OFF !

If this is true, NASCAR has no one to blame but itself. This may be the time to bring back some grassroots racing! The Corvette challenge and player's challenge series in the 80's were pretty entertaining to watch, and you ccould get involved pretty cheap. Those were the days.biggrin

Looks like it was an April's Fool Joke.  The Car and Driver link is gone.

Sorry! - Car News

Car and Driver has a proud tradition of April Fools Day jokes stretching back 30 years. We regret if this years went too far.

A joke is one thing but a story that is completely plausible and in many circles welcome is another.
