Engine Colours

Hi Guys.
I am new at this forum with a question that I couldn't find the answer for yet.
I am restoring a 1957 Canadian Pontiac Pathfinder and would like to find out what the engine colour should be, it is a very dark green but can't find a engine enamel that's the same.
Also since I am trying to keep things original , does any one has engine pictures ?
I would like to know what all should be green and what not.

Thanks

Ben

The 261 is a light green. The 265 was either gray or dark green. what engine do you have?

Hi 73SC. I was just looking at your paint chart and it was just as I expected or at least what I thought the colours were. Last year a friend of mine had his '67 GTO professionly restored (from off). Whenn he got it back the engine was painted a light green/blue. Similar to the colour of a pack of players cigarets. I was with him when he picked it up and asked the guys that did the restoration what was up with the engine colour. They told me that was the original factory colour for the 400 ci motor in the GTO for that year.     ????????????????

Thanks for the fast response.

The engine is a 261 and it's a dark green not blue.

That's the (players cigaret pack) blue that I was talking about. BUT I'm not sure I
understand. This chart says blue for pontiacs from '66 to '70 but my '67 Beaumont
SD (purchase new in 1967) had a 396 ci. and it was orange from the factory. ????

That looks like the American big block colour. I have a few cans of the blue metallic.

Two answers on the go here so here they are:

TO Leo:

The correct colour for all Canadian Pontiac V8's, including all Beaumonts and Acadians is Orange from 1958 to 1976, when equipped with a Chevrolet engine like your 396 Econo-Jet. There is no dispute on this one.

To Big Ben:

The correct colour for a 261 Strato-Six is the light green as Al Taylor has indicated. Here is a photo with the original valve cover decal intact so we know it is unmolested.

As you can see my 261 from 57 is dark green
You can still see the Chief Decall on the valve cover here aswell.
i gues they used different colours over the years for the same engine.
I was just wondering if somebody new the colour name or number and what parts are supposed to be green, like the exhaust manifold waterpump etc.

Thanks for all the response.

It must be 55-56 light green and a dark green for 57-62. Your green looks to be the same green as the green 261 in the 57 Sedan Delivery. Check the post on the 57 Sedan Delivery as there is a good picture of the 261 and it looks like it has been restored that colour.

This is going to drive us nuts now because our 61 was the lighter colour.  I think this calls for a research project like the engine names.

There is a auto supply in Scarborough Ontario that will match any colour paint and put it in aerosol cans for about $22 a can - Paint Circuit. Maybe they do heat paint if someone asks.

You think it drives you nuts mine is Ch*vy blue. When I had the motor out no one knew the right color and this site did not exist. So out of frustration it went blue.

I found a 1958 Parisienne photo, it looks like the same colour as Big Ben's engine.

1957 Brochure shows transmission as grey/silver.

Here is another 1958 Parisienne. Looks like the lighter green. Could it be possible that in 57 the switch was made to dark green then part way through 58 back to the light colour?

Well I am going with Aerosol paint from Plasticote called Alpine Green #225!  Here is a pix of my valve cover with decals that I designed!  They might not be 100% correct but I like them and they answer all questions when hood is open!

Love it Bob, nice job !  Are you satisfied that your engine in 1958 was the lighter of the two colours we show on the thread ?

We need photos of 1959, 1961 and 1962 to complete the years available. Anybody who has please PM me so I can add them to the link above.

Regarding what shade of green 261 engines should be, my thoughts are toward the lighter green for 1958!  When you look at the Canadian Sales Folders on 1958 Pontiacs, the engines shown, to my OLD EYES are a medium green, but since these colours are subjected to advertising and printing colours, they could be off what the factory produced!!!  Since there are several original 261 engines in our great club and they are showing different shades of green, it is a real crap shoot!!!! However if my my memory serves my correctly, my Dad once owned a 55 Pontiac with an original  261 and it was  dark green in colour!  Most likely GM flip-flopped, between different shades, between model years!  My thoughts only!
PS The light green that was on my engine, when I purchased it, was probably not the correct shade, as the previous owner was not that concerned about the correct engine colour, when he restored the car, back in 1976-1982!
