And the Best Canadian Beer Is ...

The results are in.

I kept track of all of the responses to the question "So, what's the best Canadian beer, eh?" because earlier in some other thread it was brought out that if you want REAL beer, then it needs to be Canadian beer, and me being a dirty white southerner, I have limited experience with such, except for many Kokanees on a train from Vancouver eastward to Montreal, so always looking to improve my lot in life, I am thinking, where better to inquire aboot the best Canadian beer than here, if car guys don't know beer then who does, eh?

There were about 2 dozen responses, not counting the few who do not drink beer, and not counting our lady from Finland who fessed up to not yet having had the pleasure of drinking Canadian beer, although further fessing up that Finnish beer is mighty fine as far as she is concerned, and who are we to disagree with her?

But I digress. Clearly you are reading this because you want to know the answer, right?

Especially if you chimed in with your favorite Canadian beer.

So, without further ado, having been kept in a mayonnaise jar on my porch until this very moment, the results are, what's the best Canadian Beer?

<drum roll>

<trumpet blare>

<cymbal crash>

All of them!

Yep, there was no clear preference. At least 16 different beers were noted as being at leas one person's favorite:
Sleeman Clear
Labatt's Wildcat
Uncle Ben's Malt Liquor
Labatt's Classic
Black Horse
Crystal
Labatt's 50
Molson Canadian
Keith's India Pale Ale
Olands Schooner
Lake Port
Lucky Lager
Big Rock Grasshopper
Molson Export
Steamwhistle
Okanagan Springs Pale Ale

Although I really should put Uncle Ben's in the penalty box because strictly speaking, malt liquor is a different product than beer.

So there you have it. Not surprising so many best beers, Canada being a mighty big country, eh?

So next time I think, "Gee, I should have a taste of the Best Canadian Beer" I am going to be might tipsy before I am done with at least 16. wink.gif

Next time you have a few of your best, have one for me, OK?

Dave

Good summary Dave,

A lot of those brands are regional and specialized. Only a few are mainstream and national brands. You could get 2 or 3 in just about any bar anytime, Molson Canadian & Molson Export for sure and likely Labatt 50. Surprised no one mentioned Labatt Blue either, there was a time when it was King of the Hill.

I declare a "FOUL".  I voted for Sleeman's dark, thus making the count invalid.  After factoring in my vote, I believe the award for best Canadian Beer should go to the Sleeman's Brewery.  I have on occasion tasted several of their brews and although I chose dark as my personal favorite, my vote truely goes to the brewery.
That means two votes for Sleeman's and I personally declare them the "official" winner.

Sleeman uses the receipe book from the great great great grandfather from 1848 or something like that.

I agree, all their dozen or so brands are very good.

Actually I did count 2 votes for Sleemans, and there were a couple of others with 2-3 votes (Labatt 50 & Molson Canadian), but there was no majority, only a bunch of minorities, hence my verdict.

However, like all judges, I am corruptible, so next time you come to Fort Myers, bring a case of your favorite, I'll invite you over and you can persuade me biggrin.gif

i vote for sleemans also, and when i was a little younger two buddies of mine and me set out to try and taste every beer the beer store or liquer store carried and all three of us when we do get together about once a year drink sleeman, tasty stuff. Cheetah (east indian beer) is a close second, but that could also be because it cools your mouth down while eating spicey curried foods!!

While in Vietnam we bought Tiger Beer from the Korean Marines.  But I don't rate any beer I drank in the Marines because it never hit the taste buds, most of the time it was warm but always hit the spot (it might have been the alcohol).

My bad for missing the beer voting thread...especially after being the one who started the blabbing to Dave about our superior Canadian brews!.

So if late entries count for anything, unless I want to try something new I'll go w/ a good ol' Canadian everytime!.

As a teen I liked Labatt's Blue also Molson Diamond being they sponsored Mosport's CanAm also other racing series..

Labatts 50 was the F-1 sponsor brand but I've never been much of a fan of it although you can always count on 50 being the coldest beer available at a bar!.

Black Label used to sponsor car and snowmobile racing so I tried to patronize them too but had to give up on them for obvious reasons.bleh.

I also remember drinking Buckeye, Colt 45 and RedCap when they were popular..

Lately when out I've been drinking the Rickards Red on Draft...tasty stuff!.
