I noticed I had a taillight out on 66, and the outside socket is 4 wire (inside is 2 ) I pulled it out, and cut wires and took it to CarQuest no stock anyone ever buy one at Napa? CTC? ???? The bulb would not stay tight in socket..
The Canadian Tire or parts Source near us has a good assortment of these sorts of items, of course if you had a parts car this wouldn't happen Had to repair a socket in the 98 Cadillac and we found something there to work.
Cars off road again Guess it was never supposed to go to cruise tomorrow night.. I tried all local parts stores 1 guy never saw a plastic 4 wire pig tail socket, in his 35 years on job!! they say, they are ALL 2 wire.. My outside is 2 brown 2 yellow, and inside are 1 brown 1 yellow and are original!!! I thought they would be similar to impala, bel air? I can connect the old one on, but it still won't work These old cars are, not for my patience level Newer cars, I go get the parts today!! I have had 66 for 39 months and had it to 2 shows and had Ventura for 10 months and had it to 1 show I think I will switch to model trains

Carl! I will check my '66 but I am sure it is a 4 wire because the inside tail lamp is piggybacked!!! If so, the power comes from the front of the car to that socket and then piggybacks to the inside socket!! Just get a 2 wire if that is the case and just join the 4 wires to the 2 wires on the socket in the right order!!! Gotta work............... In the meantime, I will check mine as I am sure it will be the same!!!
Oh and also, I have found that when the bulb is loose, the "ground" retainer pulls away from the socket and can be basically pulled out and away from it. You will notice 2 barbed spears that grab the socket. These get pulled away from the socket causing the loose bulb syndrom! Had it many times. Just remove the bulb and push the metal ground ring into the socket!! Also causes intermittant working conditions as this ground ring holds the bulb tight against the 2 power terminals!!!
One more thing, if this fixes it and I am sure it will, clean the 2 terminals in the bottom as they get that corrosive scum on them. Then pack it full of a good lithium grease to prevent it from happening again. Then do all the rest front and rear!!!

I looked in a bag of stuff on my bench while getting tools and noticed that I have a light socket with 2 brown and 2 yellow wires. Let me know if you need it.

THANKS! guys I will try the "fix " first and let you know how I make out I didnt want to wire up a 2 wire and "blow it" up, but the 2 brown and the 2 yellow go to one spade each.....

What totally amazes me, is the lack of reference, to a 4 wire pigtail socket ANYWERE in the know world!!!! I looked on every Gm site and no reference... I guess I have the only PONTIAC
"in the world" using 4 wire sockets. I ordered new 2 wire pigtails for tomorrow, but cannot fiqure out why I can't get 4 wire? I guess no one has ever restored a Impala? I am going to show with, or with out tail lights The right side will not work now!!! If you see a big white car on the road, I will be the guy with the fingers(I mean Hand signals)

OK!! So you have on the left side, power on one brown wire with the park lamps on, which is ok as the other goes to the inside socket which is previously cut by yourself. But, by cutting the wires, I wonder have you also cut the feed to the passenger side since the tail lamps are fed by one wire? Join the 2 browns together that you cut!!! What have you got?? So, with the brake lamps on, or the connector terminals jumpered at the brake switch, you have no power on the yellow? Are the brake lamps on, on the passenger side? If you do not, go to your turn signal connector at the base of the steering column and test for power at the yellow wire there and also the green for reference as well! What do you have? If nothing, make sure you have power going on the white wire at the switch and make sure the turn signal switch is not in the left turn position!!! This can happen! It has happened to me and it jumbles your mind........................... What do you have????
If all is good going in, you may have a switch issue, broken wire etc!! Remember that the turn signal switch controls the output to either rear lamp assy. I will get a pic of mine tonight and post it as well........ Good luck!

Just checked mine, the outside socket was replaced previously, not by me, so just a 2 wire! And the inside socket has 1 brown and 2 yellow. But see what you can do with my previous post!!!!

THANKS!! You were correct! I changed the left side, and it worked fine!! Decided to replace right side.. Big Mistake!!! several hours of cursing and I have 3 tailights, 3 brake lights, 3 signal lights Car Quest "crap made in Tiawan" sockets, are worse than old wore out GM I will go to show tomorrow, and get some "better quality"( made in North America) next week I took car to gas station for fuel Haven't put any in since 2006 I pulled away and car quit I limped to side street, and it started, went a block and it quit Coasted another block and stopped and it started... I went out highway, and it didn't quit again.. I thought wires to Super coil might be loose, since I had off last week. They were OK.. vapor lock? then I saw antifreeze leaking at heater hose connection... I took off another friggin tower clamp and put on a red hose clamp (made a mess) If reproduction tower clamps are so friggin good why doesn't GM use them today? Thanks had a good time at Ontario Nostalgia Drag racing day Free admisison to car show, and nice goodie bag and plaque Car ran reasonable well, considering I figured out my stumbling / stalling was old gas from last year!! Car runs well belts stop turning and squeal incesently over 4000 rpm Car drives very nice. tight and rattle free... I like the 2000 rpm at 50 mph I think I will change gears to 3.08 with the posi added... there was a 409 64 2 door there running 14.45 with street tires... My car pulls real hard! in each gear, but it handles like a elephant on roller blades lol I think I will just use it as a cruise car no racing!!
