idiot light wont turn off

So my generator telltale light or idiot light, whatever its called, wont turn off. I thought the generator might be shot after or maybe it is the regulator so i said the heck with it and finally put in the altenator. I used the delco remy from my 79 trans am and wired it up from the plans from a 57 chevy site (got the link from you great people). Now the car starts up no problem and when its running i put an old voltmeter to it (the ones that you can check also the dwell, points, low and high tach) and its sitting at 13 volts. I took my battery to canadian tire a couple days before this and it needed one of the cells filled up half way, and another one was almost dry, so she filled them and charged it up (i also gave it a charge here)

I will probally drive the car to work tommorow and check the volts again after its been driven a little longer than just around the block here. The one thing i cant figure out is why is the idiot light is still on all the time? It turned on when i went to the swap meet awhile ago which is across town and i was going a good 80 km when it happened and has been on ever since, even after the altenator swap. Any ideas would be appreciated, ive run out of brain space!!

its funny you said that, i reached up under the dash and pulled it out!!LOL Im just paranoid for no reason like usual, i mean i have CAA and jumpers and various tools so its not like i'll be stranded, but it bugs me when things just "all of a sudden" happen and i cant figure it out.

I'd say likely a connection somewhere has come loose-esp if this happened while driving 80kmh. Do you have a wiring diagram for your car? If so, it shouldn't be too hard to trace.

Thats funny, electrical tape. Brings back memories when i was younger with first 67 beaumont, idiot light used to come on all the time, couldn"t figure it out, turns out it was the emergency brake pedal , wrapped a rubber band on it and suspended from under the dash to keep it up. Sad but true, worked. Was more interested in cruising for chicks rather than properly fixing.

Well boys, I had an 81 X11 that I modified a bit too much and the check engine light was permanently on. I used electrical tape on them and it was still on there the day I traded it in on a Monte SS. wink

maybe a dumb question but if my battery will not charge up to 14 volts (i probally need a new one) would the light stay on because of the drop in voltage in the batt.?? it stays at 12.5 - 13. I might just need to put the charger on longer though and check the cells again. I thought the function of the light was to come on when there is a loss in power(volts)??

That's what I was going to recommend.
