Rim Choice

I have been looking for 15x7 new or used rims for 2 years.. I ordered 12 at my old tire shop, and they arrived w/o "bumps" for hubcaps  77-89 Caprice had 15x7 with wire wheel cover option  I found new wheels on line for 120.00 each (ouch)   I mentioned it to a friend, who is restoring a 66 SD,  and he goes to Texas on a regular basis, and when I came home from RVing yesterday, there was a mInt set of Texas Caprice 15x7 rims at my door!!     Now  do I paint them white and put on Strato Chief?  or paint them yellow, and put on Ventura II?  orrr   do I paint them black , so I can use on both cars?    The 15x8's on the Chief  w/o trim rings look awfull...   yes      here is pictures of B-body with white rims, and Ventura II with body painted rims   Carl     --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------100_2122.jpg

Not an answer, just another question. What year did GM start painting all wheels black? I mean back in the day you could see some cars with dog dish on black wheels and some on body colour painted wheels. Was this plant specific or what?

That is a good answer/question   they were not all color matched  I do not know the years    and I should, as I was there in the business...  Most cars in our area, no matter how basic, had wheels covers...  I can try them black, but its a pain to paint them a color with tires on..

I recall changing my dad's snow tires and our wheels were always black, 61 Strato, 65 Laurentian, 70 Tempest, 73 LeMans after that he went to Rally II BUT our 55 were baby blue like the car. confuse

I think black wheels came if you ordered full wheel covers (because no one would see the colour then any way) but if you just had the standard poverty caps the wheels were painted to match the body.

That sounds reasonable Hillar, but, and there is always a but, I do recall seeing full wheel cover cars with just a hint of red or some other colour peaking out around the lips. I am sure you do to.

Well I can't speak for Mopar or Ford, but I am pretty sure that is how GM did it.

If this becomes a big point of contention, I can always call my friend Scott Tiemann at Supercars Specialites restoration and ask him. wink

Carl, what about asking your restoration buddies with the shop in NB?

I will ask them, but they arn't as knowledgable as you guys... As I said before, all the years, I worked in Tire shop, in Clinton (69-83) I didnt see too many original hub cap cars   I want to try 275/60R-15 tires (I have) on the Ventura and see if it will cut down gears (3.73) enough.... I can paint the 8 inch rallies, on the Chief, white and see how that looks...  biggrin

Dupli Color alows you to change whenever you want

Car Art Temporary Paint

Want to add flames to your car for the weekend. Or maybe youre heading to a big game and want to show your support. Car Art Temporary Paint gives you the ability to apply vehicle graphics from an aerosol can. This is the newest and coolest way to add temporary paint to any car, truck or van. Plus Car Art Temporary Paint has many residential, commercial and recreational uses. Decorate home windows for the Holidays or spray lines on concrete or asphalt for sporting events. It dries in less than a minute, and it wont wash off in the rain. Not to worry, it leaves no residue on the surface to which its applied. Cleaning up Car Art is a snap just use soap, water and a sponge or power wash it off.

Try it out on your existing rims without changing any tires or wheels.
Do one side White and the other side Black. It should give you enough of a visual to make your final decision. One of them is likelybleh.gif

Well as a certified old fart, having grown up 'back in the day' and having bought new cars from 1966 onward, I will say that GM always painted rims to match body color, and if you saw a car of 50-60-70 vintage with black rims, it was because some hot-rod-wannabe (like I was then) painted them black, because it was COOL, just like taking off the hubcaps was, and (if you were a high-dollar guy) chrome lug nuts were, because that was what the racers were doing ...

I do not remember any GM car of 50-60-70 vintage being delivered with black rims, if they were not body colored then they were silver (rallye wheels) ...

But then agian, I have had a few G&T's so maybe my memory is wrong ...

Dave

Well I can say for a fact that our 60 Laurentian, 66 Impala, 70 Cutlass and 78 Monte Carlo all came from the factory with black wheels and full factory wheel covers.  I think the dog dish cars were the only ones that received body coloured wheels.

I THINK HILLAR IS PROBALY RIGHT, EVERY CAR I HAVE HAD WITH FACTORY FULL WHEEL COVERS HAS HAD BLACK RIMS UNDERNEATH. THE 3 CARS I OWN WITH DOG-DISH CAPS ARE BODY COLORED RIMS.

Oops, I forgot, my mom's 73 Nova came with factory baby moons and the rims matched the body colour.  I think that probably proves my theory.wink

If you look through the brochures, that were kindly put in out Library, as I did, and you will see most 66-70's had painted to match on the low line models   You wonder why they didn't do them all black   I am painting mine red for accent
