How much money would you spend when your pet is sick?

My 1.5 year old Basset hound(Fester) has a spine condition and the vet said it would cost about $2000 to get him help I really love the dog but we just cant afford to help him. I wonder if anyone around the Ingersoll area can recomend a good vet so we can get a second opinion. We have all became really close to him even my wife who was really reluctent to let me get him in the first place. When we first got him she was affraid to be left alone with him because we all no how vicious basset hounds are LOL! but now he goes with her every where he is like the 7th child. I will miss his welcome when I get home from work.cry

I know the vet in Simco on # 3 HWY is 1/3 the cost of any of the ones here in the Stoney Creek/ Grimsby area. The wife left for 3 weeks in France a year ago and I found a lump on the dogs neck. It cost over $2,000 to treat him. I do not regret spending the money as he is one of the family. There is pet insurance out there that covers things like this.

i agree, the pet becomes a family member. hope it works out, they're a great dog.

get a 2nd opinion.
won't some vets do a payment deal if you're strapped?

Tough call we have six Bichon/Shih Tzu's.  I would spend the money in a heart beat, so long as it would help the Fester to continue a better life.  If it does not really help Fester then it becomes that tough call.  On a note I would consider it an honor to donate two hundred dollars, for Fester's operation, if you would please accept..

In our house it's understood that if we buy an animal the vet bills are part of the equation. Today our 16 year old cat went in because she is using weight. Connie asked how to pay- debit or credit. I said debit if it's under 100 bucks. She said "I'll use credit"...

You might want to try talking to the breeder if that's who you got the dog from them recently. You can try Banner Road Vet in Thamesford. Matt, the owner of the clinic was my next door neighbor at one time- he's a straight shooter. Tell him I sent you for a 2nd opinion.

You could also shave "Tiny's" on his back and claim him as advertising! wink

One vet said it would be $5000 for an operation on our beagle to deal with his breathing problem. Went to another vet and he said get rid of his collar and get a harness for him that stays away from his neck. It's been a year and no problems. Alot of problems that our dogs get are breed specific. Check the web and see if the breed has that back problem as well.

I have a basset too (Flash) who is about 10-12 yrs old now and they are prone to spine problems. We have been lucky so far but when we got him from the basset animal rescue the lady who runs it came from Kincardine and checked out our house and said that the less stairs the better. Does he have to use alot of stairs? I would also get a second opinion.

Theres a Vet in Fort Erie "Fort Erie Animal Hospital" they are less than 1/2 the price than anyone around for anything-long drive/worth the trip.

A buddy of mine ran over his dog in the driveway, ended up with a broken front leg.He was able to pay a third, and pay the rest in a couple installments.

Hey Tiny, Have you tried Embro Vet services? They are reasonable and do a good job of looking after our kittys. Jill said they are a lot more affordable than most around here.

Our dog is a rare breed and although not prone to back problems, she slipped a disc while trying to jump up on the couch several years ago.  That was a $6000 disc surgery, not usually done by a local vet.  It required the skills of a specialist.  Her recovery was almost immediate and we though all was well.  We tried to keep her from jumping up for any reason and there are no stairs in our house.  I also built a ramp off the deck for her to get into the backyard.
About a year and a half after her recovery she slipped another disc and this time we took a day or two to discuss it prior to taking her to the surgeon.  The second surgery was about $7200 by the time everything was paid to the local vet and the surgeon.
This time she did not recover, she wore a diaper for almost a year and pulled herself around with her front legs.  We tried a two wheel cart but she just didn't like it and when I put it on, she would just stand there looking at me.
We then tried a vet about 25 miles away who had trained in accupuncture and used it successfully on other dogs.  After 6-8 sessions, she seemed a little better but we decided to stop the treatments.
A year after the second surgery, she started to show signs of recovery.  Slowly she started to stand on all fours for short periods.  Eventually, she has recovered to a point of being able to walk with a waddle and occasionally drops and drags her hips.
She is now about 8 years old with an average life span of 17 yrs.  We have decided as long as she is happy and she is, we will continue to help her get by, the best she can but no more surgeries.  Her ability to walk is not life threatening and it is amazing to see how an animal will adapt to her disabilities.  If necessary, we will go back to changing diapers before we pay for another surgery that may or may not fix the problem.
