Is there a differance between 396/427/454 engines that one can see just by looking at them?

I believe that if it's a factory spin on filter (not a conversion) it would have to be a 68 or newer block. I've yet to see a 67 model year engine with a factory spin on (with the exception of course being the Nova small blocks)

Ok, yeah that sounds like an add on.

Is there a date code on the rear of the block, likely opposite side to the block casting number?

The info I have on that block is for a 1965-66 passenger car or 1966 chevelle 2 bolt main 325 and 360 horse engines. It used a canister type oil filter.  Was your Beaumont a 350 car or a 307 car ? If a 307 the frame mounts are different. Higher and wider that the 350/396 frame mount. Something to remember.

From that pic the mounts on that engine look like the clam shell style used on cars from the 70' and 80's.  Or is just the angle makeing it look that way.
