Old Cars of Huronia

Here's a few shots I took over the past two weeks while I was at our Cottage.

Wasaga beach is Monday Night off Hwy 92 at the Walmart, Swiss Chalet parking lots. I hit Pontiac Paydirt this night. The Grand Prix was the Club President's Popular Choice that night, a 389 car that lived most of it's life in BC, originally from Oregon.

Any idea what the engine is in the that black 65?  Man that looks like my bros 409 car.  I'm going to have to print that off to inspire him!

He just closed the hood before I took the picture, It was a 327 car, a survivor too. It wasn't a show car but it was a really really nice 20 footer. Always loved the 65 Custom Sports, great grille and roofline!

As far as I know Cadillacs were franchised to specific dealer principles not car line dealerships. City Buick Cadillac, is one that sold Pontiacs, still does for now, Addison Cadillac on Bay sold Buicks and Pontiacs, Paul Saddlon in Barrie is Chevrolet and Cadillac.

There was also Parkwood Central on Yonge St. which was a Chev-Olds-Cadillac dealer but in general, it seemed to end up that most Cadillac franchises were attached to Pontiac-Buick dealers.  I guess GM figured that having a Chevrolet franchise was such a high volume franchise, that compensated for the higher profits made on Cadillacs, which obviously sold in lot less numbers.

Actually, I think as many Chevy dealers as Pontiac dealers got the Caddy. Depends on surrounding population density and dealer performance. Ontario Motor Sales in Oshawa is Chevy-Caddy, for example.

HOWEVER, in reality, you can buy any GM product at any GM dealer. Example: I had purchased a number of Chevys over the years at a particular Chevy dealer, but my wife decided she wanted a new Grand Prix. I didn't want to start a relationship with a new dealer, so my Chevy dealer did a dealer trade for me and that brand new Pontiac was delivered through a Chevy dealer.

Many years from now, guys like us will be arguing about whether that was even possible.

wink

Forgot OMS too, that's where my Monte Carlo SS was serviced. There was indeed a lot of things that could be done back then. How about this one, my Dad bought a 76 Grand LeMans form Hogan in Toronto. It wa s real nice car but it had full wheel covers. I convinced him it needed Rally II wheels. Salesman was cooperative and said he would take car of it. When we picked it up sure enough, Rally Wheels! I asked him how he did it........"I changed them with another LeMans in stock that had them." was his reply.

I suppose it helped that we bought just about every car we ever had there, but it was done. So now if that car existed and someone ran the GM paperwork it would come up as a wheel disc car.

yes we sold a few Corvettes at our Pontiac dealership in the late 80's early 1990's, this still happens today-I bought my Roadmaster at a Pontiac dealer that was getting a Chev Impala in for their customer (last summer)

The 65 Custom Sport isn't black, it's nocturne mist metallic.
Interior is gunmetal with Ponchtrain - vinyl & cloth seats.
And no it's not a 327, just a 283.
It's also a 45,xxx mile original.
Bought new at Rumble but sold to a gentleman from Swastica - near Kirkland Lake.
I have the original bill of sale and build sheet.
Yes, it's in the registry.
Since trunk is open I was either coming or going.

Yah, it was one of the better attended nights, both in total turnout and Poncho speaking.
Sorry we missed getting to meet you 73SC.

Ted

a guy down the street had a 66 Malibu SS he bought new but once documented from GM vintage it was found to be a Malibu-I always told him it was suppose to have ribbed rocker moldings and a rear piece on the quarter panels

At the Pontiac dealer I worked at in the early 1990's I remember painting a new yellow firebird red and a beige Grand Am copper

We spoke quickly but it was raining and you were packing up to leave. Thought you said it was a 327 car, sorry about that. I still love it! Obviously I made a lasting impression on you, LOL!

Next time I go I'll search you out Ted. Still have August to go cottaging, hoping for less rain too. Our place is in Lafontaine right across bay. Takes about 45 minutes to get around on the beach road. What time does the Wasaga cruise start? I thought you said you live in town, am I right?

Do you know the owner of the blue 67 2+2 I posted first of the Wasaga cars? I saw him on Hwy #26 on Saturday leaving the Edenvale Classic Car & Airplane show, I was going to visit friends in Collingwood so didn't stop at that one. It looked big, saw a nice red 70's GTO from the road, rag top, then later at night I saw it on the beach road south of Balm Beach parked with about 10 other classics at someone's home. Did you attend Edenvale?

Usually make most Mondays but don't always take the Poncho. Official starting time is 6:30 but cars start arriving before that. With the nites getting shorter we should be gathering earlier.
I live on the edge of town.
The owner of the 67 2+2 is a Wasaga Beach Cruisers member - first name Doug, last name escapes me. I spoke to him last week about logging on to this site and signing up - also adding his car to the registry.
There was a 73 SC there this past Monday and I looked to see if it might be you but every time I went by the owner was preoccupied.

Didn't make Edenvale - too many other priorities.

Ted
