camel bump/hump opinions 461 vs 462 ?? SBC heads


Hello,, I have 2 pairs ,, a 461 and a 462 casting ,, both are 1.94 valves...nothing fancy.  I'm selling a pair and just realized that they were not the same.  461 are supposed to be 62 cc? and the 462 64cc.  Most likely they will end up on a 327 with a Offy tri power.  

Opinions appreciated..

I am old school and still think those heads are the best! (Not really but when I was growing up, "FI" heads were the only way to go.)

There is a multitude of better heads on the market that you can use today but I still think the nostalgia look of those heads can't be beat.

Also, I think they can be a pretty decent head if you would be willing to do some porting.

My Chevy by the numbers book shows the 462 head, 62.076 to late 66 and 63.305 early 67. I guess the only way to realy know is to cc the heads your self. But look close enought as to not be much difference between both heads.

The 1967 462 has a small quench area above the valves to reduce detonation where the 461 and early 462 does not. Slightly higher compression with the earlier heads and with the later  less detonation and run on.

that's the info I was looking for,, with todays pump gas ,, which pair should I keep, and will work best for my mild engine.  Sounds like the later 462 pair are the keepers

I actually have 4 pairs, not that I'm greedy , just happened..now I'm selling the 'less desirables'

With todays gas the late 462 would be better. Keep in mind what it will cost for a valve job and bronze valve guide liners to keep the heads reliable. Sometimes it is better to sell the heads to someone building a date coded numbers matching engine and move on to a new set of vortec heads 96-98 Chevy truck and buy a matching intake manifold.

Hey Al, just a quick one, I have L31 5.7 Vortec heads for a 99 GMC and I see you recommend Vortec heads 96-98. What's wrong with the 99 heads? Isn't it the same engine the L31 up to 99 and I think some 2000's still used it as well in the Sierra Classic and Denali/Escalade. Just wondering whats bad about 99 vortec heads?

nothing wrong with the '99-'00 heads, less confusing refering to them as '96-'98. chevrolet also had the LS engine in trucks beginning in '99.
there are a few different '96-'00 vortec heads, the 305 versions had a 58cc chamber, others were 64cc. the vortec heads cannot handle more than .450 valve lift without machining the guides. the only other drawbacks are the aftermarket intake required and the 'look' of the center bolt v/covers.

Thanks Al,  that is exactically what I'm doing.  I am selling a 'correct' numbers matching 67 camel bump 4bbl , proper 327 valve covers to a buddy building a 67 Impala SS.  He wants it to be correct when you open the hood.

As for the Vortec,,,,I'm in the middle of building one of those ,,305 Vortec heads,, smog 76 'vette' 350, thumper cam and aftermarket intake.  I'll be stuffin it in my 64 Acadian hardtop, and pulling out the solid lift, camel bump , dual 4 tunnel ram 327.  seems to me , that's more of a race engine...LOL !!
