Happy Birthday to Me...not

noWhat a fun week I've had. First it was $400 in vet bills then today my wife gets a call from the bank- someone hijacked her debit card and pretty much cleaned out our account before the bank got suspicious. Sure, we will get our money back "after the investigation" which will take 10 business days....
No idea where they got the card- likely at the town gas station as Connie paid debit at the pumps. All the bank charges were in Scarborough-gas, liquor etc

Sorry to hear that Todd, but that is why I never use debit cards, only credit cards.  They can never clean out your personal bank account then and leave you in a cash crunch for 10 days.

That's not cool at all! I've started to pay at the pump all the time. My wife and i always go to the same gas station to get gas for the cars. I may reconsider and pay inside. St. Thomas had something similar happen last year at the movie theatre in the mall. The ticket machines had been tampered with. Luckily my wife paid at the ticket counter and avoided the problem.

Hey Todd i know of several people that had there identity stolen through different card scams and it buy far it is the single most reported crime . These scum bags doctor up ATM machines or have people sell them credit card reciepts so that they can screw over the normal person.Just be aware of what you do and who you deal with. The bottom line a hand shake and a promise isnt what is used to be!

Gas stations are bad for both credit and debit cards. If you use credit there is no signature required.

Anyway Todd we had a $19,000 counterfiet cheque clear our account. With a police report and the bank documnents completed the funds went back in no problem. Seemed to me it was less that the 10 days you mentioned. The cheque was passed in Montreal.

Connie got a new debit card- one with the chip. I have one with a chip but I notice some stores still allow you to swipe it like the old one so I'm now sure what difference it makes. It looks to me like if someone copied it they'd still be able to use it at some retailers. We should go back to the old fashioned way- taking cash out at payday and when it's spent you do without until you get paid again. Nevertheless my birthday was great once work was done. We went to my favorite Thai restaurant. My son gave me a $10 Tims card. Life is good.

I have a new debit card with a chip for about three weeks now. I think two retailers had the right system to use it so far. It is a problem because it is easy to forget the card once you insert it into the reader. At least with a swipe it never leaves your hand. Funny thing Todd, today is my wife's birthday.

Ray, you'll like the gift my sister got me. She and her husband just returned from Nova Scotia. They usually take the U.S route on the way and she found me this in an antique shop in New Hampshire:
