Canada Post Rant

I have been buying things for my car off of E-Bay and I noticed that some of the sellers refuse to sell into Canada.  Now I know why.

Canada Post has returned two items in the last month and marked the packages - address unknown.  Even though I have lived in the same house for over twenty years. One of the sellers sent me a photocopy of the original shipping label so I know the address was correct.

Now I have an item that I want and the seller is pissed off and won't re-ship because he is out the shipping cost for the first try and doesn't want to throw more money away.

Has anyone else had a similar problem with the post office and/or problems getting sellers to ship to Canada?  And if you did what did you solve the problem?

I've been an active buyer on ebay since '98.  There are often sellers who won't sell outside the US.   Most just haven't done it before, and I send them the USPS link to postage rates to Canada, and usually their ok.  I also give them instructions on how to complete the Customs Declaration form.

I have on occasion found vendors who just won't ship to Canada, so either I have them ship to a buddy in Kansas or Wisconson, and they send it to me.  I've also had other items sent to a storage place at the border and go pick them up.

I've never had a problem of my address not working.   It'd be interesting to see if it was refused by USPS or Canada Post.

I've had a handful of people who want to ship via UPS, but I explain the problem of using them (they charge like $50 customs brokerage, vs $5 Canada Post brokerage).  Usually the vendor will agree to send via USPS Mail.

I shipped a CP item to a member a month or so ago. A couple of days later the package is at my side door with the shipping label missing! The buyer got a package-some book in french with my label on it!

Luckily that's the only problem I've had with CP in 10 years of buying and selling online.

I find Canada Post to be very reliable, their rates are just too high imo.

Canada Post has been fine for me. Worst trouble I had was just after 911, I had a Chevelle console that I sent to Houston that took exactly a month to get there. Buyer was nervous (67 Chevelle 4 speed console) because it was a wanted ad I'd answered. I just kept calling/emailing him to reassure him he hadn't been scammed. CP won't open a claim until a month passes, and the day I called to open it, 2 hours later it arrived in Houston!

Otherwise, very happy with them.

I basically have had good success receiving items from the USA via Canada Post.  Just after 9-11 I had a few items opened by Canada Customs, but that's about it.   Things do seem to take a while to get here, usually 2-3 weeks, but so far everything has shown up.

I have had that problem too where Americans wont ship to Canada, or they will not ship to a PO box inside the states. My friend told me about this site on the internet called U.S Address . Niagara Falls N.Y.  For 5 bucks a week they will hold it for you and they are only 2 minutes across the border !

Here is the link:  http://www.usaddressinc.com/

Paypal now has a service where you can have items shipped to them in the U.S and they will in turn ship it to you.

I had a million problems with CP, US Post and Canada Customs a while back.
Some packages looked like they played football with them (let's put a heavy parcel on top of a light parcel and see what happens ... duh).
The rates are HUGE for both CP and customs! Customs charges HUGE for x-raying a parcel!

I haven't made any US purchases in the last couple years but used to a lot and always found it best shipping via US Postal Service w/ the added benefit of no broker fees or duty/taxes..
Sellers noting less than a $50 value and/or sample/gift on their end was necessary for smooth sailing through the border...not sure if things are any different now?.

Todd's label experience brings to mind a story an ex Canada Post employee I met camping in 1979 had told me..
I'd asked him if employee pilfering of mailed items was common and his response was that it was hard for employess to 'lunchbox' packages and easier to just carry self addressed adhesive labels to stick over the originals and the stuff was simply delivered to their house!.

How does this work with E-Bay and PayPal?

How this works is its a address that has a front door to it. Not a PO box which most will not ship to. Plus when they come to drop off the package someone is allways there to sign and accept the package. If there is fee's like brokerage dues they pay them and then when I have time to pick up the package they charge them back to me. Works real well for me, plus when something is in they give me a call.

I thought E-Bay and PayPal needed address verification and this only works if you use a credit card where the address on your credit card matches the address you ship to.  To use the system you are suggesting you would need to change the address on your credit cards unless you know of another way.

Most of the time I order from states, I have it shipped to a friends house in U S,then he forwards it to me, by mail, works well. When I ordered my Cragars from Summit, I drove down to Ohio & picked them up, got to border, & declared the wheels for my "classic" car, was asked if I got them on internet [technially yes] customs guard said "have a nice day" & I was gone!!!!  Pete

I have a deal with a buisness in Port huron Michigan . The place will hold any package for weeks on end and they charge 5 bucks a box.
I have been there with a buddy and have picked up dozens of boxes for the car when i was going through the building phase.
The place takes your email address and notifies you when the item arrives, very nice and its only a hour drive ,screw UPS and there fees.
