1965 Custom Sport in Ottawa (not mine)

I had a friend who lives in Ottawa look at the car for me and take some photos. I'm not buying, but I'll share the information I've got. If you knew what my friend did for work, you'd understand his description. wink

http://ottawa.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1965-Pontiac-Parisienne-W0QQAdIdZ145836829

My friend's comments:

"I dropped in after work (seriously, it's about 1 km from my office) and spoke to the 20something son. Caucasian male with prominent scar on forehead running from hairline (sandy brown) to left eyebrow, then across to right eyebrown. Numerous tattoos on the arms (flames, skulls, Harley) but neatly dressed in denims & t-shirt.

He said his dad is the owner, has owned the Pontiac for just over a year. Dad has been trying to sell since they moved into the house about 6 months ago (when I first saw the car parked on the driveway with sign). The son is discouraging Dad from selling as he (son) considers it to be a classic... but not one he (son) would ever drive as it's too old and slow for him. The son says the 283 is original... but the chrome and headers make me think otherwise... but 283 appears to have been available in this model in 1965. I didn't check the engine too closely as I've never been a Pontiac guy so I wouldn't know original from otherwise. Son says Dad is normally home after 6 PM; that's when it's best to call.

The vehicle itself seems relatively sound. It was parked on a dirt driveway and I was in business attire so I didn't crawl underneath to check the frame but, peeking underneath, it appeared to have a thick coat of mud & oil all over the bottom. That used to be a favorite way to achieve cheap undercoating (burnt oil plus a drive along a dirt road) as you likely recall. That being said, it was somewhat effective as a rustproofing.

The body has several surface rust repairs, especially around the wheel wells, which were "fixed by Bubba" but didn't appear to be rusted through. It's been painted several times. I saw evidence of at least four colours (white, black, red and blue) but I would say it's never been stripped/restored. Under the hood, the metal fender skirts are still intact and the firewall looked solid. In the trunk, the fender wells are open but covered with black and dirty looking. I didn't dig down (nice clothes) but I lifted the carpet... Underneath was surface rust with some rust-through. During the last paintjob, they sprayed under the hood, inner doors and truck lid but taped off the seals rather than removing them. I didn't dig under the carpet in the interior but it's a safe bet there's surface rust at the least.... because...

Everything rubber on the vehicle (window & door seals, suspension bushings, etc) needs to be replaced. No surprises, given the age of the car.

Fixed by Bubba appeared to be a consistent theme throughout the car. For instance, where the vinyl roof started to bubble and peel, Bubba didn't fret... just break out the black electrical tape and "problem solved" such as it is... Speaking of electrical, I took a picture of the "deep cycle" battery with the assorted wires leading away from it. You know me... fussy about electrical...

The grill, chrome and stainless rocker brightwork were intact and appeared original. Definite candidates for rechrome but there's lots of meat there.

The Pontiac has drum brakes all the way around which have been painted silver. It's wearing a set of Cragars which have seen better days but, like the bumpers, there's lots of life. The spare tire (in the trunk) is also a Cragar wheel. The front tires are rubbing as the tires are a bit too wide for the set-up. I wouldn't want to push the old girl hard on a test-drive, given the lack of bushings in the front suspension and the oversize tires. I'll bet it handles slightly better than a Sherman tank.

The doors sag when opened but still close well. The interior is black and looks original throughout. There's ever some Bubba electrical tape repair on the seats.

The 283 started at the first rock of the key and ran smoothly, if a bit rich. Exhaust had scent of oil on startup but clarified within a minute or so. Valve guides?

Overall, it looks like a decent prospect for a project; not currently enough there to drive it much or far but good bones..."

The photos he took with his Blackberry......

Quite a difference between a close-up and an Internet ad photo, isn't there. A good reminder for us all.
wink

Internet ad photo...

Actual close-up photo...

Naturally, everyone wants to get people to come see their cars for sale, but if people find too many surprises after a long trip, they won't be happy potential buyers. I'd rather know up front. If I hadn't found another car, I still might have bought it.

Unhappy usually means No Sale.

Thanks Bob. I would say by the description your friend provided, he's in the detective business.

Kind of figured. Liked the comment about his being dressed in "business attire" when his line of work was fairly obvious when you read his description!

I can picture him in a Fedora if this was the 50's!

I'm very proud of my friend and all that he's accomplished. Due to the sensitive nature of his duties, all I can tell you is that he's very involved in protecting this country from enemies, foreign and domestic.

Interesting in the pic beside the lake. Ablock of wood by the back tire to keep it from rolling away.
Really builds confidence.

Do you think in his retirement he would consider travelling across the country for overview and inspection reporting, Loved the breakdown

Well the above picture reinforces my conclusion that Blackberries are way overrated smile.gif but you are very fortunate to have a perceptive friend to check out cars like this before you waste your time going to see them ... stuff like this

shows cheap and ineffective rust repair, and of course rust is the big enemy for us ...

OK, so let's just put it out front that I am an Old Guy. Not old enough that I have forgotten how it is to rebel against the old guys from my generation, but WTF happened that tattoos and piercings and twitter and facebook and all that **** replaced honest work ethic and ...

At least you don't have Obama in Canada ...
