Here's a link inside GM to the actual Caprice photos -

Holden have been selling their 'Chevrolet Caprice'-badged cars in the Mid-east for some years now. It really does make you wonder why rwd production was finished, supposedly in favout of more profitable truck production (at Linden NJ?). We in the UK get Vauxhall-badged Holdens, or rather HSV special derivatives.

I have seen the Ute in person (a Maloo?)..it was imported and run by a Vauxhall chap and had a kmh speedo...with a bit of stuck-on paper reminding of relevant mph equivalents!

And no civilian version available? That sure makes no sense.

Seen one of the Utes here, Probably an older version, but didn't have my camera. That sucks, cause I'm always carrying it. Anyways, it was a very cool looking ride.

Here's the GM press release:

http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet?target=http://image.emerald.gm.com/gmnews/viewpressreldetail.do?domain=2&docid=57260

So when do you think the OPP will be retiring their first shipment, about 2013 or so?  This announcement dovetails perfectly with the closing of St. Thomas next year.  If they are going to have to support the parts and service network for the Caprice any way, wouldn't it just make sense to offer a civilian version to take some advantage of economies of scale and keep the costs down?

Exactly. Why have a special, limited run for police? Makes no sense...

That autoblog article is old news and discredited.  If you search subsequent to that date, you will find that Lutz had a massive case of foot in mouth disease, and had to totally retract that statement after he got called on the carpet by Henderson.  There are no plans right now to build any civilian version of that vehicle for North America.

Yes, from what I've read, as Hillar says, that July statement is obsolete.  The latest stories say no civi version.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong though...
