Both license plate bulb burnt out on my POS Hyundai winter car have been burnt out ever since I bought it so I thought I better replace them. It was another one of those jobs that took way longer than it should. If a guy lived in Arizona the two screws that hold each lens should come out easily and then the bulbs could be removed. Here in PEI they are pretty much solid rust on a 15 year old car. The plate lamps are mounted on the hatch so my next plan of attack was to remove the inside trim panel from the hatch to access the sockets from inside. It was a case of where you could see the bulb sockets but needed the hands of a 2 year old to reach them. I eventually managed to remove the sockets with a long pair of needlenose pliers. I replaced the bulbs with LEDs in the hopes I'll never have to change them again. Getting the sockets back into their holes and twisted into place was also a fun job.

i     would like to know if any member has ever been pulled over for plate lights not working. that said the wife got pulled for plate covers too dirty

Smart (and great) idea on the subframe stand Mark. Will make it a bunch easier to work on.

Even though stuff like this gets covered up, it's the overall feeling and satisfaction you get knowing that you've gone through in detail in these minor systems. It makes my entire classic car experience even better, the car seems to just feel better. If I never had these things to do, I'd probably not even bother having the old cars.

What I did in the garage today....

I reminded myself why I'm anti-LS engines!

Our 2008 Impala 5.3 developed a miss on Christmas Eve while we were plowing some snow on a pretty bad road on the way to Grandma's. Engine light on, engine runs like crap, at idle your eyes burn if you stand outside the car the raw fuel smell is so bad. Took it to Winnipeg yesterday and it was running the same but under 25% throttle it misses,  anything from about 25% - 100% throttle it runs great. Go figure. BUT it's sucking gas like a pig, trans is shifting super hard etc. All due to the engine light being on I surmised.

Today my friend came over with his scan tool. P0205 and P0300 codes, the P0205 code being miss on #5 and I think the P0300 said due to injector wiring issues.

Called the service manager at the dealership where I worked so long and said "this is one of those calls where I want free advice and need you to fix my car over the phone"! (He and I worked together for about 40 years at 2 different dealerships before I retired in 2020). He asked a few questions and then said "swap the coils between #5 and another cylinder".

I took it one step further and swapped the coil, plug wire and plug between #5 to #3.

Road test. Works perfect. Great.................... I didn't change anything, didn't find a problem and now it runs and scans perfect. Arggggggh.

Maybe a bad connection at the coil or injector? I wiggled the injector wires at the same time I swapped the parts.

Give me a carb and points any time.

Not to Diss you Carl..but you luv carb and points because you know carb and points. Once you get to know and be able to circumnavigate around the LS....you'll luv them! These engines are all bout grounds!! 5 v sensors so any resistance can muck things up! ..........and you fixed it for 0 $$$$...biggrin  O ya.....plowing snow with an 08 Impala = driver abuse..........winkbiggrin

If I were to do it all again, I'd definitely do an LS. So much to learn and tinker with in the program.

A beautiful day here in PEI. Sunny and 8c. I took advantage of the weather to bring stack a bunch of firewood. I also installed a wireless bridge from my house to the outbuilding and to my sons house in between so we can share the internet in all three places. I had to get up on the roof of the outbuilding to install one of the recievers.

That is one of the Diagnostics on Newer cars is to move coil and plug to different cylinder, But move the parts to different cylinders then you can
verify part by which cylinder it moved to. P0300 is generic misfire code and P0305 should have been cyl 5 misfire. Not sure about P0205 code. Unless GM has there own
numbers for misfire.

Never too old to learn Carl, last fall I figured out a bad coil on a 2007 Mini Cooper S by switching coils on 2 and 3, the code moved with the coil to a new cylinder. Replaced all of them for $25 each from rock auto. Ive only used a $100 BluDriver, it saved my neighbour over $1,000 on a 10 minute scan vs what the dealer was going to do.

I checked P0205 and it is an injector circuit issue.

Put about 40 miles on the car today, still perfect with the work I did. I'm guessing it might have been a bad connection. I fully expect it to return, I'm just curious to see if it will return on #3 or #5.

Just guessing but I'm betting a big block would be 125 -150 more?

Depends...some LS are aluminum block. Looks like 375lb for alum LS long block and 675 for a BB long block. Maybe add 100 lb for a cast LS

Hunkered down inside today while the winds howl and the snow comes down. However yesterday was a nice day. I was able to obtain quite a few 8 foot juniper 6x6's milled nearby for a song. I have no idea what I will use them for but the price was too good to turn down. Ol' Sally had no problem hauling them. It took two truckloads to get them home. I stacked them up on the south side of the barn for now.
