what did you do in your garage / shop and or driveway today ?

I changed the oil in my snowblower yesterday and boy oh boy was the oil dirty. It had a strong gasoline smell to it and I think I must have forgot to change the oil last year, or perhaps the last two years. Anyways, I thought I had enough cheap 5 w 30 for the change but I was short about 300 mls. I think it takes about 700 mls. Anyways, long story short, I wasn't driving to the nearest Crappy Tire for oil so I made a blend of 400 mls of cheap certified 5 w 30, 150 mls of SAE 30 (lawnmower oil) and 150 mls of Joe Gibbs 15 w 50 conventional HR Driven oil with zinc.

I fired the blower up to mix it all up and we will see what the oil looks like in spring. I need to remember to change the oil in spring. It has electric start so I am not too worried about having a slightly heavier oil in it for winter.

One of my bubble tops was that colour. I sold it via eBay, I said it needed floors, rockers, hood, trunk lid, trunk work, rear quarters, engine, transmission, interior redone completely, some frame rust repair too, this car reminds me of it.

I was going to fix the (hopefully) faulty rear wheel speed sensor on our Accord today to get the ABS light off. Since it's a miserable, cold rainy day a friend of mine offered his warm (with electricity) garage to work on it. I took the car to his place last night as it was still dry out and planned to come back today around lunch time to do the work. He texted me around 10am saying "car all fixed, just need to bleed the brakes" (I also wanted to bleed the brakes again as I just replaced 3 calipers and felt it could use another bleed). So.. I'm heading over to do that and clear the ABS code. On top of it all we're invited to stay for dinner! What a great friend!

Cleaned up a couple of C3 hubs that I bought a few years back on Ebay. I hadn't had a close look at them and they still had the bearings, races, and dirty grease in the hubs so it was time to clean them up!

Wiped all the grease out, hammered out the races and let them sit in a Metal Rescue bath overnight. Took them out the rescue bath, washed them up and gave them a shot of dry coat and a shot of Crown Rust control. They look OK and these hubs are going to end up on the Grande with a C3 spindle and a disc brake upgrade. You can see the notch inside the hub where you can get a punch on the race to pound out the inner and outer bearing race.

I need to quit buying parts and start installing the ones I already have like this C3 system, re-bushing the suspension, installing a 3 1/8 turn L to L Saginaw box, and perhaps cruise!! I hope I can get it all done this year, lol!

Nice Jake! Gather then biuild.

Tip; When re-installing the races in the hub, put them in the freezer for a few hours. Heat the hubs to about 200 degrees in the oven, pull them out one at a time and quickly install the race fresh out of the freezer. They'll all but drop right in.

I was thinking about the oven and freezer method.  I will go to Dollarama and buy a $2 cookie pan, make sure the wife is away that afternoon, warm up the oven and Voila, installed bearing races!

We had our first real snowfall Friday into Saturday morning. Really heavy crap. Shoveled the walkway and buggered up my back. In a lot of pain now. I've never hurt my back before. Must be from turning 50! Son came over asking for help putting his winter tires on and changing oil. Popped some muscle relaxants and we got it done. He did all the heavy lifting. He also helped put my winter tires on. Now the wonderful howl of studded tires for the next 6 months..

Is it true that studs actually can damage the road? I know a tire guy, and a friend asked if I could get studded tires he owns mounted. The friend said only north of Thunder Bay if you're in Ontario. I guess there is nothing like them on glare ice?

I've heard that but I think the damage is negligible. I think the trucks hauling logs do more damage here. We seem to see more ice than snow anymore here so I felt studs would be best- especially with Connie driving. She is still hesitant to drive in the snow since her crash. Anything to help her get her confidence back.

In the main part of Ontario believe studs are allowed anywhere north of Huntsville. the address on your ownership is the determinant.

Do studs damage the pavement? Ever noticed the difference in sound when you cross a patch of pavement where the snowmobile trail crosses a paved road? Snowmobile belts are studded.

Probably wrong, but to my way of thinking, on any other surface condition other than hard ice, they could actually be detrimental to traction. No?

Just for laughs I polished up the factory skirts from the 65. Buffed the paint and trim. Yes, skirts on a post car. Imagine!

They're in very good shape including the sealing strip, so they were likely removed years ago and a full factory wheel arch trim was added.

If not too much trouble (if the slotted bracket is there), I'll try them on next year for a laugh. Who knows, it might really bother that anti skirt crowd!

Mark, I can't say for sure but I am betting either those skirts were extra cost new or added at a later date. I don't think Strato Chiefs ever had them as standard equipment.

I picked up this Kralinator display rack at the Antique Mall. There was a Purolator sticker over the Kralinator and someone started to remove it and took most of the "K" off. I removed the rest of the sticker with a heat gun and drew in the "K" with a sharpie. Must be from the 60's. I'm pretty sure 70's had a different logo. Too bad the shelves weren't spaced just a little wider apart for oil cans.  Litres and U.S. quarts will fit but Imperial quarts only on top and bottom. Still a cool shelf unit.
