Just finished doing all the A/Arm bushings in Impala. Uppers wouldn't clear the exhaust manifolds [409] so had to cut the bolts off leaving enough to press out, then after new bushings installed, install new bolts [ loose] in frame then install A/arms, and use air hammer to press bolts into frame!!! Alternative was to remove manifolds or lift engine!! Didn't want to open a "can of worms" removing manifolds!!! Not a "fun" job re-installing frt Coils but having spring compressor sure helped but felt like I was carrying a "time bomb" after compressing springs. All new B/joints, & sway bar links, new gas Shocks Next is trip to alignment shop, put all shims back in proper location, but bushings were "so beat" I'm sure it will need it!!! Getting TOO OLD for this $hit, & body HURTIN!!!!!

May not be as bad as the "409" lump!!  My 64 wagon with SBC has lots of clearance on upper arms!!!  Left side less with strg. shaft but will still clear.

I had 2 different ones in tool box I bought to replace tools lost in garage fire!! 1 was external & other was internal, used the internal one as no room to have the other one on outside of springs. Worked well but still a bit nervous doing this!!!!  Tool box is a "Dale Ernehart  Jr. special edition with side box!! Took 5 guys at dealership to load in my trailer & trailer tires were a bit" squishy" with weight!!  Mechanic had a "Stroke" and unable to work. Estimate there's close to 50 grand with tools & box & I got the "DEAL of the CENTURY" on it!!!!!!

Backed the 409 out of shop & "major" clean up to that side of shop. No more "gronking" from frt. suspension. Swapped sides & have wagon in bay with out hoist now to do pre spring maintenance & install LED's signals in side mirrors !!! Impala was too "unstable" jacked up on 4 poster to do suspension with height needed to get springs out. Really need that rolling jack but $ 1400 is steep.

Installed a Perma Cool brand canister to spin on filter adapter. Non bypass so all the oil gets filtered. Added about 1.5 liters of oil to the big non bypass K&N 6002 filter, and another 5 or so to the pan.

I'm going with Lucas 30 wight break in oil, and probably overkilled it with the addition of a bottle of Comp cams break in additive. Poured it in the Lucas jug and mixed it all up before pouring it in. I say you can never have too much zinc on a new flat tappet build.

After pondering using a CS style alternator, I just went with what I know best. A 12SI. This one is a 94 amp, listed for a 85 Buick riv 307. $120 from Carquest.

I used this adapter Bill. Super easy install.  Seems to be of very good quality as well.

The no bypass is the reason I'm going with a extra large filter (along with 5w20 eventually).  Almost twice the surface area of the bigger filter should allow for quick flow under all conditions.

I've leaned that the bypass system can open under colder startup conditions. This when using a smaller more restrictive filter,  thus allowing unfiltered oil into circulation. Might be overkill, but to my mind this makes more sense.

Mark do you have to use any parts of the old canister filter ?

No parts get reused with this Perma Cool adapter Bill. Other types are available that do, and as such they retain the filter bypass feature.

I think we're pretty good with keeping our oil and filters changed, and choosing quality/correct grades, so the chances of a plugged filter are pretty low.

Be aware at startup, that heavier grade oil when cold can be resistant to passing through a dirty and smaller filter media area, so in some cases a bypass is still advisable so as not to starve the engine of oil.

No coating. I just bead blasted them Kevin, and they came up kind of grey. I'm just going to let them go natural.

Tore down the 67 distributor. Cut the little gear oiling slot, and gave it a bead blast.

Question;

Were the pre aluminum cast steel distributor bodies painted black. It seems there was still some black in place above the clamp flange, which quickly dissapeared when degreasing.

My 283 distributor had lots of black on it still too.

Cleaned the brake pads and rotated the tires on my car. I also installed the soft roll-up tonneau cover on my truck.

Mounted a new Carter fuel pump. Tried on the PS belt from Carquest that they originally had no listing for. Had to self measure, got 35" using a section of extension cord. Same thickness as the alternator belt (.44) which was Dayco # 15535. Looked it up on the Dayco site and got 15350 for a 35" belt. Went back and they had it in stock. Perfect!

FYI, The last 3 digits of Dayco V Belt # is the length. 15350 = 35.0

Bolted on the cleaned up plug heat shields (chrome paint lol!). Looking near done now. For more than a few years I've looked at this sad little engine under the bench thinking "I'll fix you up one day"!

Just have to add the rebuilt dist, fit the wires, rebuild the Qjet, maybe paint the pulleys ( I suspect they came just grey phosphate though) and add a water neck and T Stat. Then I'll start setting the engine stand up as a test stand.

Looking very nice Mark.

I happen to think those 327's of that era are beautiful in the stock trim like that.
