The info says there was oil on the rockers,.... but not enough, and therefore threw a rod.  But, if you are running an engine without the valve covers on, there is going to be, or should be oil splashing or squirting everywhere.  Might be a lack of lubrication problem, lol.

great video kevin..dam that would suck..yep was shocked right away that they didn't have covers on and NO oil was starting to spash around..no way they could have primed the engine,to check for top end oil and oil presure..even when things are done right theres still a chance things can go side ways though I quess..I can see being in a hurry to hear the motor run and not check things as one should mind you..! and a bad memory don't help..did I tighten this or that ?? Now I am thinking about my rebuild and did I check this and that .!!

They said one cap wasn't torqued, and flew apart,.....but oil could help as well, lol

The video poster says he's done over 500 engines?

No covers on, proper lube flow and those headers would have been soaked and smoking in oil. The was my first thought when seeing it.

But at least he's a good sport and let everyone see it! Gotta give him that.

Now I'm going to have to pull my pan "just to check". Thanks Kevin!

I am sure that I am not alone here but those who have adjusted lifters and covers off knows the mess the oil makes

I have always just set them cold and never touched them after start up but cutting open the top of a set of old covers is a good way to adjust them with very little mess

Yes, if a guy takes his time and does it right that works great, and no mess to deal with.

I've never seen an engine run like that with no oil to the top end.

And why was there no bottom end noise prior to it blowing up? Or is the exhaust just too loud?

One more reason to have good exhaust on a new engine startup.

My 63 Corvette, I bought a rebuilt 327, at about 2000 miles and it started a faint knock. My fantastic mechanic buddy could figure from the sound which piston was doing it. We dropped the pan (easy to do on the vette) and the one cap was loose. Checked all of them and put it back together and it worked great.

just before the knock showed up, it started steaming antifreeze out the passenger side tailpipe, my buddy guessed which exhaust valve was leaking. Pulled the head, it had hardened seats installed and oversized valves and the seat was into the head. Found another pair of rebuilt heads from a buddy in Cape Breton (they were stored under his bed) and bolted them on, ran perfect. The knock showed up while testing the new heads. My drag race acquaintances recommend against doing hardened seats.

We should do a "My Engine Stories" post on here Don. There probably are a ton of stories of success, humor, failure and out there.

Fired the 327!

It started up pretty much no trouble. Too much advance held it back a little. Ran it for 1/2 hour at around 2000, varied the speed. Tach did not work for some reason. Went by ear. Temp came up to 195. Oil pressure good. One leak at the oil pressure sender fitting. Water pump leaked when I added water, stopped when it got hot.  Small exhaust manifold leak on top at 3 and 5. Small drip at the main seal? Pan gasket? Hope so. Will check when the flexplate comes off. All water tight. Ran better each time I started it.

No noise, no knock, no ticking, runs smooth, no smoke. Starts and Idles nice. Blips really nice! Pretty crisp. Dipstick smells good. Plugs look good. No carbon. I'm happy.

It sounds good and steady. Any feedback from the neighbours?
