RE: what did you do in your garage / shop and or driveway today ?

Well here's one reason why I haven't bought an old car this year. "Mr. Sensible" strikes again.

solar6.jpg

Do you think the folks who built this house in the 1800's had any idea that some day we'd be able to get electricity from the sun? Fourteen 445 watt panels. The incentives were too good to pass up. We'd like to get another 16 panels (ground mounted) in the next couple of years.

Electricians come next week to tie it all in.

Tell us more about it Todd. What can it power, how does it tie into the grid etc.

It's a 6.2kw grid tied system. When you install a grid tied system here in PEI you have two meters. One for power you use from the grid, the other from how much you give back. You get monthly credits. So if I give 1000kw back to the grid, I get that much taken off my bill. The KW/Hr rate is the same both ways. Not quite as generous as the Ontario plan where they pay a higher amount for what you produce.
The PEI gov't offers a $1000 rebate for every KW of solar system you install. The system has a neat phone ap that will allow me to monitor how much power the panels are producing, real time usage and historical solar production.

The panels and inverter have a performance warranty of 25 years (workmanship and materials 12 years). Payback time is about 8 years.

I'd buy one of those 20" lift ramp doodads in a heartbeat, except they're CAN$6200.00 over here with no extras!

So I'll have to continue to make do with axle stands, concrete blocks and timber offcuts......................

Spent money on tools again. This time on a power bleeder for brakes.  This thing works fantastic. I had a slow fluid leak in my rear brakes. (Dual reservoir) could not find it. I dry pumped the system up to 20lbs. and tapped the pedal, it blew fluid out the proportioning valve.
after i replaced the proportioning valve i had a firm pedal. I bled the brakes with my sons help and now have a rock hard pedal.

This was not to be done until the new deck was installed but I think the new deck can wait for the pressure treated lumber market stabilizes.

The wood stringers were rotted and the guy who built it, tied shorter stringers together to make the long ones.

Now, steel stringers (3), concrete footings and all nut and bolt construction.

Very hard to build a straight, square flight of stairs off a crooked deck confuse

Since I currently don't own a vehicle with a trailer hitch, the next person who needs to borrow my trailer, can empty it smile

Looks good Randy. I think dumping your trailer would be fair compensation for using it.

Fair yes but we are talking about my family biggrin

Called Corey's Auto Wreckers first thing today.

They had a model specific, bolt-on trailer hitch, on the shelf, for $90.

$20 of high strength nuts, bolts and washers from Peavey Mart (T.S.C).

One can of Rust Check and I'm just a wire harness away from being back in business !

Still plugging away on my parents Karmann Ghia project. The body is roughed out and in primer. Spent a couple weeks cleaning  and painting power train parts. Put the pan on my motorcycle lift and assembled.

We're one step closer to having a functional solar system. The electrician came out Friday and installed the disconnect switch, second meter head and tied it all in to the mains.

solarmeter.jpg

It's interesting to note that the inverter is on the roof so that black cable is already AC line voltage. The green wire is ground. For safety sake the system requires a "signal" from the grid to operate. If power is lost from the grid it shuts down. It waits 30 seconds after grid power is restored to come back on.

The next step is an inspection (hopefully early next week) and then hopefully by the end of next week Maritime electric will install two new meters.

Good stuff! The labeling of the components reminds me of the interior of the 1966 Batmobile:
