RE: what did you do in your garage / shop and or driveway today ?

A new addition for our Gaspe fleet landed in the driveway yesterday. Picked up this '19 570 Sportsman 2 up EPS for below market. Only 650 kilometers! Really wanted to buy new, but nothing (and no guarantee) until July or August. And you have to pay upfront along with a market surcharge. Forget it.

Wife wants to ride now, the power steering makes it so much nicer than the standard steering, and the extra wheelbase makes it ride pretty nice. Simple machine to be sure, but nice that it shares the design with what I have.

I haven't done much with cars for nearly two years; instead my attention was diverted to upgrading some properties I own. But during these past two weeks I finally got at some minor cosmetic upgrades I've wanted to do for some time on my 69 Parisienne.  Feels good to be doing something productive with the cars again.

Next project will probably be  a new convertible top installation on my 68 Impala convertible, followed by a a front end rebuild of my 66 Caprice.

I'm still debating whether I should upgrade my 55 Bel Air to front disc brakes and power steering for safety and drivability. At present, the car is bone stock.

Will you install the new top yourself?

I'm going to try to get someone who knows how to do it and I'll become that person's helper. Unfortunately there are not many people in this area who do this stuff. Worst case scenario: I'll take time to figure it out and try it myself. This is not the preferred route however.

never installed a top but have sold a ton over the years. Please do not take shortcuts and please install new pads and tension cables even if the the old ones maybe look good. Dale; previously NOS

Fitted the right front AC/Delco spring height adjuster (actually two weeks ago today - I've been very busy). Well made, well priced part but sooooooooo difficult to fit! Managed to smash the tip of my little finger against the brake drum in the process. Finger nail hasn't fallen off yet. It's my own fault, I couldn't get the Magnaflow system properly up out of the way and it was bottoming out on some of our "traffic calming" road humps. 58 year old tired springs don't help but they did make the stance look good. Adjuster appears to have done the trick without too much change to the look.

Only 3 more to fit........................

Antifreeze leak, first test drive & Grandville "sprung a Leak" previous owner put a new water pump on as he said it was seeping but it was more serious!! timing cover to intake by-pass popped a BAD leak!!  On tear down, no grommet , just a pile of really old silicon that let go!!!  Put new Comp/Cam gear & chain set in as old set up was a "little sloppy' and now was the time to do it!! Ready to put cover back on [ this time with a grommet] and get this back together. wasn't expecting to be doing this, especially at my age but $hit happens!!!thumbnail (5).jpgthumbnail (6).jpgthumbnail (7).jpgthumbnail.jpg

Not being hard on your car Pete but that setup for the seal always seemed silly to me. I built a tri power 455 years ago and had to figure out the proper way to install that (tighten down that long bolt first before torquing the intake).  I am quite sure you already talked about that so you know very well what you are doing!

On my other old car I am installing turn signals. I had an old self cancelling aftermarket turn signal switch that I pulled out of a car years ago. I had everything roughed in and the turn signals worked but were very slow. Also I noticed the pilot light in the switch wasnt flashing (3 pin flasher). I went to unplug the flasher and it was hot, almost to the point of burning my fingers, it was metal not plastic. I checked the inline fuse and I think the flasher was a problem for someone before me!94F85936-ECB7-4489-A176-34EF07BF872B.jpeg

It's been a bit of a tough week or so. Sometimes the simple things can put a smile on a guys face, like an envelope in the mail with something special inside.

Very nice! The colors on that plate (along with the ID) will look exceptional on your car!

Very nice Carl.....biggrin.....I have always tried to have personal plates where possible....smile

In 2005 we bought a Dodge Magnum SXT as a retirement present. In Lynda's working days

one of her favorite expressions was..."I'm making a quick exit". I surprised her with the

plate...... QIK XIT......still have the car, the girl and the plate, never winter driven.

The 67 Ford 3000 tractor isn't charging. Someone swapped out the original gennie for a Delco alternator. The alternator is now right below the power steering resevoir and it looked as though whoever added fluid was usually drunk and spilled most of it on the alternator. So, thanks to Rock Auto an exact replacement arrived for 85 bucks all in. Began the removal yesterday only to find the wires leading from it go nowhere! Further investigation revealed lots of spaghetti under the hood. Someone removed the key switch for a large disconnect switch (on the ground side) and a pushbutton to start. I'm leaving the ground switch but am swapping out the pushbutton for a proper key switch. A trip to Princess Auto got me the switch, a junction block, wire, heat shrink tubing, terminal ends etc. I ordered a replacement plug at NAPA for the alternator. I think I have an inline fuse some where. If all goes well this weekend I'll get it rewired properly. There's also a small fuel leak at the inlet line on the lift pump. I'll leave that alone until I replace the fuel filters as I'll have to bleed the system then. She's also getting new engine oil, transmission and hydraulic oil (son's paying for those fliuds as it's HIS tractor) biggrin

Not today, but yesterday. Detailed one more item to make the "FAKE_66" a more accurate fake. Removed the ignition coil and bracket, stripped the paint off them. The small blocks had the coil and bracket mounted on the intake before the engine was painted but the big blocks had the anodized bracket and aluminum coil mounted after the engine was painted. Little by little I'm doing my best to fake it!

Carl, is the coil resting on the intake or is there space under it?

Funny you should ask that! I initially had it resting on the intake but then when I thought about it I moved it up about 3/8". I can't imagine it being right on the intake would be good for it.

He got his guys to do it. they thought rotor and hub all one peice and they tost in scrapfurious

Finished installing the Aqua Windlace (pinch weld) on the '65 Vert, added a 2 qauge under dash console, changed out the damaged hood lip molding for a new Old Stock Goodmark part. List is getting smaller.

It's alive!!  so far so good on leaks but on test drive still missing, but 2 watts bulb came on!!! S/plugs were new but "white" water in fuel???  dumped a can of 'Sea Foam in [on 1/4 tank of fuel] and pounded the PI$$ out of it, lots of backfires then cleared up and ran smooth and lots of power, actually spun the back tires, so cam adj. gave it some more juice!!  Talked to previous owner up north and "yes he did run reg. ethanol!!! Even though I'd put Premium in it still had water in tank!! Now I have to apply for a 2nd MORTGAGE to fill it up!!!!!!thumbnail (9).jpg

Good stuff! I mean about it being a better car, not about it likely taking $150 to fill it!
