Big Win

Yesterday the team I coach came up against the Markham Islanders, undefeated 4-0. It always is a big game when Leaside faces off with Markham, just about the same as Leafs vs. Canadiens, our arch rivals. We were 3-1-1 going into this one.

My first challenge was traffic, whew what a day in TO. Then I had one of my best grinders away at Grandmas, a big D out with a tendon pull and another guy battling the flu who hadn't played the last three games. Top it off another D forgot his pants! Yikes.

Two shifts into the game I turned to one of my Assistants and said, "these guys haven't won four with offense" I knew this was a points game and I wasn't going to let them get away. Now plenty of guys out there think a coach is just a door opener and the players play the game, guys who played the game know that's not true.

I don't know why but I got my game face going like I haven't in years and when we got the first goal I knew it was time to go for the jugular. I know they are just 13 but they were 6th last year and made a quick playoff exit and here we are up 1-0 on the undefeated big dog poised to make a run at first.

I managed that bench like I haven't done in years and I got the best of the boys, by the end of two it was 4-0. With about 1:50 to play we got down 5-3 and the inevetiable happend, it finished 4-1 but we laid a beating on them just the same. It was a great win for the team and I couldn't have been prouder.

Thank goodness I got to see a decent game yesterday, the Leafs are just terrible......again. no

Congrats to you and the team. The coach is definitely not just a door opener when my son was younger 7 8 he was so into it he would score 3 goals a game at least them he got a new coach. He hated the coach as did most of the kids first year he still tried and scored a goal or 2 a game the next 2 years nothing and finally he quite. He said why should I bother all he does is yell and scream at us any ways. Before this coach they were first or second in there league each year by the time he quite they were last. This kid lived for hockey now he wants nothing to do with it.

Ray ....Way to get behind the boys and lift them up to win. That's what a coach does is to motivate his team and make them play their best when they think they can't win.

Vern and Kim your words are right on. I had a coach when I was in Bantam that almost ruined hockey for me too, yell, bench kids , kick stuff. I learned from him actually. I learned never to be that Coach.

My 20 yr. old son comes to all the games and I have him do stats, goal placements and keep notes to help me. On the way to game he says to me "Dad, you're a motivator, give them a barn burner pre game talk, more than anything they gotta want to win and you have to make them feel like they can". Good advice from a guy who still plays.

It could be worse, you could live in Toronto! Going to head down to the ACC tonight and take in the "game" vs. Colorado.

I gave my tickets to Ray for tonight's game.  I was still feeling woozy and didn't think the Leafs would be a good tonic for what ails me.  In fact, I think I got the stomach flu at Saturday's game courtesy of one those over priced "Burkie's Dogs" they are hawking this year.  A regular hot dog with some baked beans thrown on top "a Maple Dog" -  for $7 - what was I thinking? clueless.gifbleh.gif

update: end of first period, Loafs are down 2-0.

Thanks To Hillar for the tickets, Jr. and I headed down, I opted for the tried and true $10 roast beef on a bun, you get a bag of Miss Vickies too and a coke, a cool $14.00. I don't know what Jr. paid but he got a pizza slice a bag of peanuts and a coke, I gave him $25 so no change expected.

We got there early and took in the pregame skate, I like that, then they had this fine tribute to Ted Kennedy, a number of his teammates joined in on the ice,  Gaye Stewart, Jim Morrison, Danny Lewicki, Dick Duff and George Armstrong.

We were having a great time....then the game started. No, we really appreciated the offer of tickets Hillar, I love to study how NHL teams set up offensive zone possession and break outs. Joe Sacco is really coaching the Avalanche well, he's obviously getting the most out these guys. I learned that the breakout I am teaching my team is what he uses and so is the offensive puck possession set up. Once the game was under control they used a different offensive zone play, so I learned something tonight.

Here's all you need to know, I captured the loudest cheer of the game on my phone camera......

Well glad you got something beneficial out of the game Ray, at least you can employ those coaching tips with your own team.  The tribute to Ted Kennedy was very nice too, as for the game itself...

Looking at the schedule, I'm afraid the Leafs could go 0 for October. omg.gif

That second goal with seconds left in the period was absolutely the worst effort I've ever seen by a defenseman, Thomas "sign me for $4 million" Karbele. disbelief

Jones on the other hand put in a Herculean effort to show him up.   thumbsup.gif

Darcy Tucker I should add played a solid game and earned a star, the crowd gave him a prolonged ovation when they ran a few clips of his efforts as a Leaf, he showed a lot of class by standing on the bench and acknowledging the crowd. The officials too waited to start the play until the cheering had subsided. I'd say it was a good one minute ovation, maybe longer.
