Had your Caddy fix today?

Bob Lutz challenges any so-called Caddy killers

May the best car win. So says GM's Bob Lutz, and he's willing to put his Pilotis where his mouth is... so to speak. On a conference call last month, Maximum Bob challenged any journalist to a duel with the Cadillac CTS-V, and, not surprisingly, the mantle was picked up right quick by the boys at Jalopnik.

Rules? Sorta. Any stock production four-door sedan is reportedly eligible to go up against the Big V, and the drivers will be lining up against the clock on October 29 at the Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, N.Y. While Jalop's Wes Siler was originally slated to go up against Lutz in a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, that car has since been switched out in favor of the Jaguar XFR (earning the ire of TTAC in the process).

Here's the best part: Anyone who happens to own a new comparable sport sedan, such as a BMW M3 or M5, perhaps a Mercedes-Benz AMG sedan or the Audi S4 (not to mention the Mitsubishi Evolution), is welcome to submit themselves for consideration to take part in the festivities in New York. We're not sure how the participants will be selected or exactly what the racing will entail, but if you're interested in throwing your hat into the ring, click here. For what it's worth, we've driven the CTS-V around Monticello, and we figure the smart money is on the Daddy Caddy.

From the CTS-V site

American muscle is no stranger to debate. Thats why we created a performance-luxury vehicle to shatter any outdated perceptions that Stateside engineering is made for straight lines but cant corner. The massive stopping power of the 6-piston front, 4-piston rear Brembo brakes. A high-performance chassis developed on the worlds most challenging test tracks. And the Magnetic Ride Control suspension system, reacting in less than one millisecond in both Touring and Track modes. True, the CTS-V will do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, but this isnt about setting records in a straight line. Its about setting the record straight. Introducing the all-new 556 hp 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. With a Nürburgring® lap time of 7:59.32.

Get one now while  you can.  Trust me, all cars like this are going to be casualities of Obama's new CAFE rules, that is unless GM can sell 100 Volts for every CTS-V...

Hillar, I mean a used one. I'm done buying any new cars unless I hit the lottery. Another Cadi I want is a XLR-V

I keep checking the dealers around me for a nice used one for the family, doesn't have to be a V  model, even the V6 screams. I not giving up my Deville for one though. A number of my Rotary buddies have CTS's and they all love them. Looks like a Cadillac dealership when we have Roatry meetings, one XLR, 4 CTS's, one Seville and my Deville.

Since the "V" is over 1,100 lbs heavier, and has less torque, it'd be interesting to see who sees whose rear bumper.

My friend has a 07 Z06 Corvette that he wants to take me for a ride in. 505 hp has got to be fast.
He let me drive his NSX when it was brand new, but this I won't ask or accept the offer.

Our CTS is an '03, the introducary year with the "orphan" 6 cyl that was only available for the first year.  Then they went with two available 6's, one smaller and one larger than ours.  The general feeling is that the smallest of these three 6's is underpowered.  Ours produces about 210hp which is ok, as it is coupled to a 5 speed standard trans.)  Overall, I really like the car.  Nice size, nice look, good quality, and it's North American!  (Love to have a V though.  First generation with 400hp would do me fine!)biggrin

I was thinking about the 304 HP V6 or whatever they rate it at, but with drivers 17, 20 and 22, 210 HP is probably just right.

Got my insurance in today, my youngest is added now so 5 drivers on two Cadillacs and a GMC, the nerve of them it went up $7.

Just noticed your kids ages are the same as mine.  Got a son at 22 and a couple of gals at 20 and 17.  They've got their own vehicles so I don't pay alot of attention to how much it is but they can drive our vehicles too if they want.

Bob Lutz Cadillac CTS-V Challenge Results Announced

Last month, during a discussion with journalists about General Motors new May the Best Car Win marketing campaign, Bob Lutz laid down the challenge to any journalist to a duel with the Cadillac CTS-V to see if any comparable car could topple the Caddy.

The guys at Jalopnik quickly accepted, putting forward Wes Siler who was originally planning to race in a Jaguar XFR until officials pulled the car because of fears of the brakes overheating. Luckily Siler still had a Mitsubishi Evo on hand.
He was joined by Jack Baruth from The Truth About Cars who also drove a Cadillac CTS-V and several civilians driving a BMW M3, a BMW M5, an Audi RS4 and even another Cadillac CTS-V.

Well, the event took place today at the Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, N.Y. and we now have the results. Taking top honors was former GM Performance Division Executive John Heinricy with a lap time of 2m and 46.56s in the Cadillac CTS-V.

1. Cadillac CTS-V (John Heinricy): 2:46:560
2. Cadillac CTS-V (Aaron Link): 2:48:902
3. Cadillac CTS-V (Brian Redman): 2:49:183
4. BMW M3 (Michael Cooper): 2.50:424
5. Cadillac CTS-V (Jack Baruth): 2:51:153
6. Cadillac CTS-V (Lawrence Ulrich): 2:53:026
7. Cadillac CTS-V (Bob Lutz): 2:56:321
8. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X (Wes Siler): 3:08.126
9. BMW M5 (Michael Mainwald): 3:08:989
10. Cadillac CTS-V (Chris Fairman.): 3:14:292
11. Audi RS4 (Tom Loder): 3:15:702
12. Jaguar XF (Archan Basu): 3:16.670

Very Cool!

Is that the Brain Redman of Can Am fame? I was thinking of looking at them recently when I saw pictures of the sport wagon.

How old is Lutz now? 70 + . He still kicked the as$ off Wes Siler in the Evo, the M5, R4A and the Jag. Good on him.

This appears to be an unofficial Caddy site, too. wink

And, to boycott GM vehicles, I'd have to buy someone else's products, which I won't do anytime soon.
