Peterborough has long been known as the hockey hot bed of Ontario.

Carl is right, the Great one  played 3 games for the Petes when he was 16 as a call up. His Jr. B team at the time was the Nationals.

Thanks for the pics....Wild.... I used to have a pair of Bob Neelys skates, My stepfather worker with Gainy's father at Quaker Oats, in Peterborough. Colin Campbell played for them too, I think...

My brother was asked to try out for them 2 years in a row, but decided he liked Football better...He wound up not playing either. He came up thru the midgets with Cory Stillman, My Mom swears he could skate circles around Cory...LOL

We were talking about this this morning, how so many guys who are better don't make the show. I'm probably closer to the system than you now, if you're willing to fill a roll, like drop the gloves and bang it up like Stillman, the scouts will find you. How else can anyone explain Tie Domi and Nick Kypreos making it?

I know Bill Plager of the St. Louis Blues Plagers (brothers Bob & Barclay). He lives in P'boro, worked at Quaker Oats, and played for the Petes. His basement is a hockey shrine.

Barclay also played for the Petes.

I remember going back to P'Boro for a visit one year, and I managed to go to one of my brothers games,  He got a "Gordie Howe" hat trick for me(so he said later) My Mom and Stepfather weren't impressed with him fighting though. I forget how old he was, but they(both kids) agreed to do it.

I grew up being coached to drop them at an instant, I was defense and always big, in my last years I would play at 6'1" and 195 lbs. I even got a suspension for grabbing a referee by the jersey and scaring the crap out of him, 3 games, now a days I don't think you'd play again.

Anyway it is such a different game now and I have to coach my boys to stay out of that. With the way penalties are called today you have to have a pat PP, it can win games for you and change the momentum. Sunday night our first goal was on the PP and two more after that. It was 5-0 but those PP goals made all the difference.

Yup, Definately a different Game now-days....Don't think they'll ever remove all fighting, though.  My favourite PETES games were the ones against the Toronto Marlies, Pretty much gauenteed a bench emptier in every game. TO always seemed to have Huge players, compared to the Petes

Steve Durbano - I think he is dead now, did time too.

I remember being at Maple Leaf Gardens watching the Petes and Marlies ina playoff game and the place was packed to the rafters, just like an NHL game, only difference was you couldn't hear yourself think it was so rowdy in there, Durbano went nuts on the entire Petes team and starting tossing chairs and all sorts of crap on the ice from the peanlty box....insane. The police finally had to come and take him out. And Torpnto had good players too Tallon, Shutt, Napier, Murphy.

I know about the Peterborough Petes, but what is a "Pete"?  Sort of like "What's a Dodger" - originally Trolley-dodger as Brooklyn had a gazillion trolley cars.
