POCI

Hey folks, I'm thinking of re-joining the POCI. I dropped out a few yrs. ago, didn't like the "new" management attitude, Smoke Signals seemed to have nothing but new  vehicles [Astech, Solitice, & new GMC trucks] & none of the adds. had pictures,[ they dropped that to save on costs] We did enjoy the convention in Greensville South Carolina, it was shortly after that, it went down hill.[2005] Tried to call the number that they have on their site & in OLD AUTOS, but it wouldn't go through no e-mailed them for # and am waiting for reply. Has it gotten better, & how's the "SIGNALS now,  Thanks  Pete

Sounds like my story Pete. I let it lapse because I didn't like the new Smoke. With the CP Specialty Chapter now, I am thinking there is a lot more in it for me now.

Carl, Thanks, guess I'm not the only one that noticed the change in the Smoke Signals. The CP chapter caught my eye too!!! as well as this yrs. convention is in Charlston W V & we have friends there, accomodation's are waiting for us "CHEAP"& it's not that far to go,we go there every June for a small car show that our friend helps put on, so we have to go twice, that'll "rack up" some miles on the Catalina!!!

Pete & Carl send me a PM with your address and I'll send you a complimentary copy of a back issue of Astro News Flash, the Canadian Pontiac chapter newsletter. That might help you decide. Keep in mind that the newsletter has interesting articles on Canadian Pontiacs, Beaumonts and Acadians and cars made for the Canadian market. Of course everyone is welcome to join and enjoy our chapter ! biggrin

I just got off the phone with Paul at POCI,seems their 877 # doesn't work in Canada

had to call on long distance, re-joined & even got to keep my old number [cool] he said he would change # in OLD AUTOS add as well, I just hope they have improved since I left a few yrs. ago,  Pete

I've always liked POCI. I've been a member since 1985, and I'm glad I joined the Canadian chapter. But I continue to have concerns about the current Smoke Signals magazine. The design, layout and reproduction quality of the printing are pretty disappointing and have not really improved.

Funny! You and I joined the same year. We also feel the same way about the Smoke. Sounds like if I join the Canadian chapter I will likely be glad I did!

Carl, I know the CPSC news letter editor and so does Hillar. Hillar told him it has "too much content" and to cut it back wink

I'm surprised to hear you say that John.  I think there has been a tremendous improvement over what the Smoke was like a few years ago.  It is like a regular car magazine you would buy at the news stand.  It's now 72 pages each issue, as a comparison, something like Muscle Car Review is about 90.  It's printed on glossy paper like regular magazines and find the print quality to be fine.  Do you actually prefer the paper version we used to get which was like 1/2 the size of the current version?  Also, the articles by Don Keefe in the last 3 issues where he has been interviewing the workers who used to work in the Pontiac plants in the 60's has been outstanding, as have the pictures.  I only wish we could find someone like that who worked at Oshawa.

I belong to a few other "national" US Clubs like the GTOAA and Late Great Chevies and their magazines don't hold a candle to the current version of Smoke Signals.

Just my twocents.gif

Ray is such a keener, I told him there was too much content in the upcoming issue and told him to hold some articles back for the leaner winter months when there won't be as much current stuff like car shows to write about.  We don't want the well to go dry too early.wink

Now I'm going to make a plug for the newsletter and help Ray out as well.  All of you who are members, please consider sending in an article, Ray can't do it all himself and I worry about him burning out too early!  It doesn't have to be anything spectacular, just a short write up on your car or something  you have done to it or some other CP related material.  Dig through your archives and see what you can come up with!  Remember, we all like pictures as well and I'm sure there is a lot of stuff that our American members have never seen before and would appreciate.  We want to make this the best newsletter in POCI and I want Ray to get an award for being the best editor next year! smile

I will amend one point after seeing this month's issue. In the coverage of the POCI/GTOAA co-vention, the picture quality and the print repprduction of the drag racing is very good.

Dug up my old post. Just informed the POCI I wouldn't be re-newing. Thought things would have changed from when I dropped out before, but no, the Smoke signals takes a mth to get here, just got the Oct. issue on Oct the 27th. Activity on their site is really poor, many members came up with moving their for sale sect. into the forum to get more people there, but nothing happened from the "up above folks' Conventions are expensive to go to, travel & hotel fees etc. I just couldn't see what benifit it was to belong. Talked to a few members & they said you need a local chapter to get the benifit, not the "non regional" specialty chapters as they are too spread out to have any organized gatherings of any #'s!!! So I'll be content with my friends here, & our small get togethers like we had at Hamilton this summer [even if it did RAIN all day]

I like it a lot better now than when they first revamped it. Print quality and picture/color reproduction has improved. So has the content in terms of the feature cars. And Hillar was right: some of the Pontiac historical stuff they've run has been very interesting. So it has improved a lot. Nevertheless, I liked the old mag better.
