Swine Flue Vaccine

Just wondering if anyone on here is going to be getting the H1N1 vaccine. I just read a 13 year old toronto boy died from the virus. He was a start hockey player. That really hits home as my son is also 13.
Thoughts?

I will 100% get the shot.

As far as 13 year olds go, the team I coach was at a tournament this wekend in Grimsby/St. Catharines. Three boys were too ill to play on Sunday and now today one of our goalies is home sick too. 4 out of 17.

Am I concerned? You better believe I am.

My daughter got hit with the H1N1 symptoms on Sunday. Went to the doctor yesterday.
Apparently it is contagious from 1 day before symptoms for approx 5 days total. I figure any second now I will be hit by the symptoms. Line ups here are 4+ hours to get the shot at 1 of the 4 locations in the city.

I just wish they would also post how many deaths occur from normal seasonal flu. I'm sure that the vaccine will be helpful to some but i just think all this ramping up is, pardon the wording, overkill. Let's see, my son can't have it since he's less than 6 months old and now we would have to wait until when to get it? Plus flu shots are pushed back to December. I've only ever gotten the flu shot once, that was eight years ago. Since then i've had the flu only a couple times. Got something in the mail today from Health Canada describing symptoms, still so confusing to know since they include runny nose and sore throat. Is it a cold or H1N1?!?! Working in media i'm inundated with all the news daily and it gets to be too much. As it is now i'm really against the shot, that's just my opinion. I forget who sent me the email but apparently an old trick is to put cut up onion out in dishes around your house, it takes the germs out of the air. Doesn't seem a bad idea seeing as the chance of the vaccine being totally effective aren't guaranteed. Still, i'm not trying to disuade anyone from getting the shot who wants to, let me make that clear. I'm just not convinced of it myself and as i stated at the start, let's have a comparison of seasonal flu statistics.

I had a sore throat for about 9 weeks. Got checked to be safe.

No plans to get a flu shot. I'm not saying I can't get the swine, just saying I don't plan to get the shot.

As mentioned, the regular flu kills people every year.

I'm a no go as well. This thing is untested in my mind. 4 months to test something you are giving the world is scary. Go to youtube and scan flu shot Red Skins Cheerleader. THis is a sad story and pretty unlikely but this type of thing can happen with any immunization....

Not for me. Why all this scare now? If we've known about it for so long how come we can't stop it at the source?

Social websites like Facebook and Twitter are full of opinion on the H1N1 vaccine. So is most any Google search.

Would you give over the decision on your health to a random poll on Facebook? Here's the facts:

http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/ccom/flu/

If you want a non-governmental perspective, check this:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/h1n1-swine-flu/the-h1n1-vaccine-six-key-questions/article1339569/

This is not the flu we have been used to. This is hitting the healthy and the young and really calls on everyone to wake up, ignore the Internet myth machines and rumour factories, get the facts and get the shot. This flu can attack the heart of a healthy person, and you don't have much time when that happens.

This year, the risk is not worth it. I'm getting the shot. If I die, you can say, "Told you so". wink

I'm with Bob 100% on this one.  I have gotten the flu shot at work for however long they have been offering it (probably close to 15 years) and I have never gotten the flu in the time I have been getting the shots.  Before I started, I got the flu at least once each winter.  Here's something else to read:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/refusing-to-get-vaccinated-is-selfish/article1339120/

Do you really think our health care system can absorb another 100,000 hospital patients?  I doubt there are a couple of hundred vacant hospital beds in total right now in the entire country...

Ray! Keep us posted about the players, hoping it's not serious. Figure I'll get the shots when available, the 13 year old goes from having his dad run him a bath to dead in less time than it takes us guys to get dressed in the morning! This is not a cold , I'm not going to take chances.

There so much out there it's hard to determine what's true and what's not. We read the FDA info provided to doctors with the vaccine on the FDA website. Now regarding the very young and pregnant they say something like "Do not administer unless absolutely necessary". What the hell does that mean? They also rate it at 80% effective. I'm really confused about what I've heard about this boy in Toronto. The fever broke, it seemed he was better but then he collapses and dies. I have not heard about the H1N1 attacking the heart. I did year that in some young, healthy people with strong immune systems the virus will attack the virus profusely in the lungs which can lead to death (basically drowning in your mucus) but nothing with the heart. I'm no doctor but wouldn't the fever still be present if the virus was active and the body was trying to fight it off?

I had a customer who is a GP the other day. I went to high school with him and I asked his opinion on the shot- he said he wasn't satisfied that it has been properly tested.

A coworker's 13 year old daughter is recovering from H1N1. Yes, it she was tested and H1N1 was confirmed. She was off school for 3 days and still feels wore out but is no worse for wear. I wonder if the standard flu would have effected the 13 year old boy in Toronto the same?

Maybe I've been very lucky, but I haven't had a bad case of flu for 30 years. I had a bad bout of it in the 1970's. I still remember the doctor coming to my house and giving me some sort of a shot you know where....
