Our son (15) called from school to say he had back pain and one of his legs was numb. My wife and I work in the same office. We decided she would take him and get him checked. Within 10 minutes she called me as she was leaving school for the hospital and now his second leg was going numb. I got her to turn around and come back to work and pick me up. When I drive we make it there a lot quicker!
We are about 40 minutes from the closest Winnipeg Emergency and 50 minutes from the closest competent (in our opinion) Emergency Room. Considering the current health scare we opted for the rural one assuming Winnipeg would be crowded.
Long story short, about 3 hours after arriving, a checkup, blood tests, x rays etc we have no final verdict. By that time the feeling was mostly back in his legs. However, I certainly saw my share of candidates for H1N1 in the waiting area! Boy there's a lot of people out there who are showing signs of the season we are in.....

Can't be too careful these days. I hope he's Ok. One of the office girls has been away from work a week, and it turns out her 4 year old has H1N1, and then I heard a friend in the Edmonton area has 2 little girls sick with that too. The symptoms came up very suddenly. With air travel so readily available, diseases can travel the world like never before!
Sure hope he is ok Carl. I know it sounds like an old tale but growing pains can do that. We had to have my eldest daughter taken by ambulance from a restuarant when she was that age, her legs numb and she couldn't get up. Within hours, A OK.
Now, my wife works in the health service field. I won't name the hospital but today they had a meeting there and it was cancelled. There were so many people in the Emergency that they called every last chair in the hospital from all the meeting rooms and cafateria into service to accomodate all the patients.

I was pretty sure the Emergency Rooms across Canada would be even more crowded than Tim Horton's.
Funny you mention the growing pains Ray. He had horrible growing pains for years when he was about 5-9. It has all been fine now. I say funny, because he is 6'2" and the doctor informed him he's still growing.....
These will be trying times for health care workers, no doubt.

Thank you. I think he will be fine. We just wanted to be sure it wasn't something affecting his spine, or something crazy like a blood clot.
And a praise item for the hospital is that as busy as they were, they made us feel like it was smart that we had come in.
Sometimes you get the impression that they wish you knew more about medical conditions and could have figured out on your own that it didn't need a trip to the hospital!
